1 Arrested After Duquesne Armed Robbery
DUQUESNE (KDKA) – A woman is in custody after an attempted armed robbery in Duquesne early Friday morning.
According to police, the woman entered the McDonald's in the 100-block of Hoffman Boulevard around 3:30 a.m.
According to police, 32-year-old Amanda Schaffer is accused of walking up to the drive-thru window, forcing it completely open, firing a shot and crawling through the opening.
There were three employees inside. The bullet hit a wall near the soda dispenser, but no one was hurt.
Although the drive-thru is open 24 hours, the inside of the restaurant is not.
As Schaffer crawled through the window, one of the workers ran for help. Duquesne police say Kennywood cops were there to help.
Schaffer was found hiding behind a dumpster in the parking lot. The gun was under the dumpster.
In all, more than $3,500 was recovered.
"Struggling man; I am struggling," Schaffer told reporters after her arraignment. "I got kids to support, so this is what happened."
Schaffer's children are 8- and 10-years-old. Authorities say they had been left home alone at a home in Duquesne. She asked police to check on them and then apologized for the robbery.
Her children are now with their grandmother.
Schaffer told investigators her troubles began when she was fired from Eat 'N Park at the Waterfront where she worked as a server.
"They fired me because they said, 'we just don't think the job is right for you,'" she said.
Schaffer was booked and taken to the Allegheny County Jail where she is being held on $100,000 straight bond.
