1 Killed In Uptown 5-Vehicle Accident
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – One person was killed and several others were injured after a multiple-vehicle accident in Pittsburgh's Uptown neighborhood Tuesday morning.
According to officials at the scene, the five-vehicle accident happened on Second Avenue in front of Metal Tech around 8 a.m.
"Seconds, seconds -- I'm trying to replay it over in my head right now," witness J.J. Kraska said.
That's how quickly it happened.
Kraska was standing along Second Avenue Tuesday morning when a spectacular crash occurred involving five vehicles and a fully loaded dump truck.
"I saw two cars coming down in bound, one car clipped the truck," Kraska said.
The dump truck flipped on its side, cars spun, flipped and crashed.
Those who could walk away from it did, including a mother and son.
At least three people were taken to the hospital and two were listed in critical condition.
Kraska ran to one of the cars and saw two people in the twisted wreckage.
"I ran over and called 9-1-1," Kraska said. "They were both responsive and moving at the time. We got a fire extinguisher in case something happened. I told them to stay calm, relax."
"I'm speechless," Kraska said. "I did not wake up and think this was gonna happen today."
Shortly afterward, one of the victims died at the scene.
Hours passed with Second Avenue closed and traffic was rerouted.
"One of the drivers is definitely at fault," Sgt. Daniel Connolly with the collision investigation unit said. "We're not gonna put out which one, but we do have what happened here. We are looking at possible speed, passing issues, we're probably going to be looking at charges in this case."
The name of the fatally injured victim has not been released.
