1 Killed In Route 28 Crash
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – One person was killed in a crash on Route 28 early Sunday morning.
The accident happened between the 31st the 40th Street bridges around 1:45 a.m.
State Police say 46-year-old Christopher Streiff of Sewickley died after crashing into a diving barrier in a construction zone.
The crash also happened as May is being promoted as motorcycle safety month statewide.
"We had, last year, 210 fatalities, and obviously that's 210 too many," Allegheny County Council member Heather Heidelbaugh said.
"Allegheny County has more motorcycles registered than any other county in Pennsylvania, so there's a lot more on the roadway," said Steve Cowan with PennDOT.
Nine people were killed in motorcycle accidents in Allegheny County last year.
In 2012, PennDOT promoted a "live free, ride alive" campaign outside PNC Park.
The purpose is too spread a safety message to motorists, to drive without distractions and share the road with motorcyclists.
A Lawrence County woman was charged recently with homicide by vehicle after she allegedly struck and killed a motorcyclist while texting.
"That just makes the challenges out there that more demanding, on both the motorcyclists, because we can be as safe as we can be," says Hal Deily with the Pa. Motorcycle Safety Program. "But if a motorist doesn't see us, we're going to pay the price more than they are."
Also, Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program offers safe riding classes for motorists.
"We're really trying to educate the motorcyclist out there how to make themselves more visible to other traffic how to position themselves within the traffic flow, so they can be more visible," Deily said.
PennDOT also reminds drivers and motorcyclists that more than 100 road projects are underway, during construction season, and it's important to slow down and drive carefully.
