1 Injured, 1 In Custody After New Castle ATV Crash
NEW CASTLE (KDKA) – One woman was injured and another was taken into custody following an ATV accident in Lawrence County overnight.
According to officials at the scene, the accident happened around 12:30 a.m. in the vicinity of Mahoning Avenue.
Witnesses said when they drove by, the quad was being pushed along the roadway. One woman was visibly hurt, while the other was allegedly asking to get rid of the ATV.
"The lady was on the ground like she fell off the back of it. She couldn't breathe, she was unconscious. Another girl bent over her asking if she was okay. The truck stopped. The lady pushed the quad down the road and the lady kept telling my cousin and his friend to steal it and drive off," Michael Rao said.
The injured woman was flown to a local hospital and her condition is unknown.
The other woman was taken into custody, but it is unclear what charges she may be facing.
New Castle has recently proposed an ordinance that would ban recreational vehicles such as ATVs and dirt bikes from the roadways. It would also come with a fine.
New Castle police say they believe the two women were drunk when they tried to cross the viaduct -- the ATV crashed into a concrete barrier.
This is the second ATV crash in New Castle in two weeks. Mayor Anthony Mastrangelo hopes a newly passed ordinance banning ATVs on New Castle streets will help prevent incidents like this when it takes affect June 18.
Fines for the first violation are anywhere from $100 to $300.
