1 Dead In West Mifflin Crash

WEST MIFFLIN (KDKA) - A driver was killed in a fiery crash in West Mifflin early Monday morning.

According to police, they spotted the car traveling at a high rate of speed and then found the crash site.

West Mifflin Police said even though officers and fire crews were able to respond very quickly, there was very little that could be done for the driver.

After crashing into an overpass, investigators said the Cadillac CTS-V launched into the air, dropped 20 feet, landed on its roof and caught on fire.

"We had a one-vehicle accident at about 1:30 this morning. At the present time, Allegheny County Police are investigating that accident," West Mifflin Police chief Chief Ken Davies said.

Chief Davies said one his officers actually spotted the vehicle minutes before the accident and tried to pull the driver over.

"An officer did view a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, erratically on Lebanon Church Road. He turned around to try to initiate contact with the operator, but was never able to," Chief Davies said.

Allegheny County investigators said this is not being classified as a police pursuit.

Initially, the West Mifflin officer notified surrounding departments of the speeding car. The officer quickly came upon the crash and called for backup and fire assistance.

Chief Davies said that no one else was injured in the accident and responding emergency crews also were not hurt.
