1 Dead After Home Invasion In Washington Co.
WEST PIKE RUN TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- The investigation continues following an apparent home invasion and fatal shooting early this morning in Washington County.
State police surrounded the home in the 300-block of National Pike in West Pike Run Township. It all started around 4:30 a.m.
According to investigators, the husband and wife who live in the home woke to a noise. Officials say the man grabbed a weapon and went to inspect, finding an alleged burglar halfway inside his house.
"There was a burglar attempting to break into a house," said Lt. Chris Neal, of the Pennsylvania State Police. "He was confronted by the homeowner. The homeowner was armed. He fired a single shot, striking and killing the intruder."
The Washington County Coroner has identified the man who was shot and killed as 30-year-olld Elijah Malanosky. He was pronounced dead just after 6 a.m.
State police would not go into the details of the confrontation between the homeowner and the alleged burglar, but did say that the homeowner felt threatened and says he acted in self-defense.
"The homeowner's statement was that he was confronted in an aggressive manner and he fired a shot in defense," added Lt. Neal.
Investigators say that the alleged intruder and homeowner did not know each other. Also, while initial reports were that there were possibly multiple intruders, police say at this time they only know of the one but the investigation is ongoing.
"Right now, while we're conducting the investigation," Lt. Neal said. "We're looking at following up on all possible leads, including any co-conspirators who may have taken part in the burglary."
State police say at this point in their investigation it's too early to say whether the homeowner will face any charges.
