1 Dead, 2 Injured In Port Vue Home Invasion, Shooting
PORT VUE (KDKA) -- An 18-year-old is dead and two other people suffered injuries following a violent home invasion and shooting overnight in Port Vue.
The incident started around 11:30 p.m. at a home on Liberty Way.
Allegheny County Police say the 62-year-old homeowner had allegedly been growing marijuana inside the house.
Following the incident, a cart full of guns and marijuana plants were pulled from the man's home by investigators. Family members identify the homeowner as John Zyskowski of Port Vue.
According to police investigators, a 24-year-old and the 18-year-old are accused of attempting to break into the home with the intention of robbing the man of the marijuana.
Gunfire erupted inside the home after a physical altercation, but police say it's unclear who fired the first shot. Authorities say that they believe the homeowner was armed.
"They wanted to steal his marijuana," said Lt. Andrew Schurman, of Allegheny County Police. "The homeowner had a weapon, as did one of the would-be robbers. They exchanged gunfire inside the house."
The homeowner and the two suspects were wounded.
The two suspects fled and eventually drove to UPMC McKeesport Hospital for treatment. That's where the 18-year-old, identified as George Langley, of McKeesport, died from a gunshot wound to the chest.
The 24-year-old, also from McKeesport, was transferred to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital for a gunshot wound to the arm.
Zyskowski was grazed in the head by a bullet.
"The homeowner was transported via ambulance to the hospital," said Lt. Schurman. "He had superficial wounds."
He was treated, released and immediately taken to Allegheny County Police headquarters for questioning.
The Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting, and the Allegheny County Police Narcotics Unit is investigating the alleged marijuana-growing operation inside the home.
Investigators say the "homeowner will be charged accordingly for the drugs and the 24-year-old will be charged with crimes related to the robbery."
Zyskowski will most likely not face charges for shooting the suspects. Police say it looks like at this point he was protecting his home.
