1 Dead, 1 Injured In McKeesport Home Invasion
MCKEESPORT (KDKA) - A home invasion turned deadly in McKeesport Wednesday morning.
According to police, a gunman opened fire just after 5:30 a.m. killing a man and injuring a woman.
Family and friends gathered outside the victims' house, demanding answers and information. Some in McKeesport are also calling for the mayor to get the gun violence under control.
Brian Cook, 24, was shot and killed this morning, while he was in bed sleeping. His girlfriend, in bed beside him, was also shot, but survived.
Word of the shooting spread quickly, which brought friends and family to the crime scene. John Leggett knew something was wrong when he saw his friend's dog being removed from the house.
"Just please tell me everyone's okay. And he's shaking his head no. Everybody's not okay," Leggett said. "I don't get it man. I just don't get it."
Forensic investigators dusted for prints and police were unsure if there was forced entry into the home on Versailles Avenue. Family members said Cook leaves behind two young children, a 4-year-old girl and the couple's 1-year-old son, Jayden, who is believed to have been at the home at the time of the shooting.
"Who would try to hurt him? He's not a bad dude. Our past is our past. We've all been in trouble in our past, but we're grown now. We have kids. I don't get it," Leggett said.
Some were emotional hearing of yet another shooting in McKeesport and that another young father was shot and killed.
"This boy has a baby. And every summer, McKeesport is losing teenagers, 20-year-olds, a whole generation," Deborah Leggett said. "And the mayor of McKeesport needs to step up or move out of office. Period. Point blank. We need to vote him out and get someone in office that's [going to] handle the killings in McKeesport. I'm sick of it."
No arrests have been made and Allegheny County Police have taken the lead in the investigation.
