3 Dead After Head-On Crash On I-79 In Mercer County

SHEAKLEYVILLE, Pa. (KDKA) -- Three people are dead following a head-on, two-vehicle crash that shut down part of Interstate 79 in Mercer County Friday evening.

The accident happened just before 5:45 p.m. on I-79 in Deer Creek Township.

According to state police, 62-year-old Robert Neubert II of Amherst, N.Y., was traveling in the southbound lanes when he lost control of his 2012 Dodge Challenger, went over the median and onto the northbound side of the road.

That's where Neubert's vehicle crashed head-on into a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze driven by 54-year-old Susan Thomas of Sewickley.

State police say the impact of the crash was so violent that it vaulted Thomas's vehicle over a guardrail and then landed on its right side.

Neubert was taken by ambulance to UPMC Horizon Greenville Hospital and pronounced dead.

Thomas and her passenger were pronounced dead at the scene by officials with the Mercer County Coroner's Office.

The passenger has been identified as 44-year-old Mary G. Carmody of Sewickley, according to the Associated Press.

The accident caused a traffic mess for miles as a stretch of the road had to be shut down and vehicles were detoured.

The road reopened around 10 p.m.
