1 Dead, 1 Injured In Beechview Crash
BEECHVIEW (KDKA) – Police are investigating after one person was killed and another was injured in a Sunday night crash in Beechview.
According to police, the crash happened on West Liberty Avenue around 10 p.m.
A Ford SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control and flipped over. It came to rest on a hillside across from a Duquesne Light substation.
The driver, Edward Stiefel, 37, of Pittsburgh, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
"He went right through the windshield. It was bad," Scott Auglia said.
Auglia was inside his restaurant when the crash occurred right across the street.
"I [thought] somebody threw a brick through my window. I ran outside as fast as I possibly can. The SUV was here, had a victim that was here. There was another lady that was trying to resuscitate," Auglia said.
Then, Auglia heard something.
"There was somebody in there. I could hear a cry from somebody," Auglia said.
The SUV was smoking and was on its side with a another victim trapped inside. Something had to be done.
"He and I, the bouncer from next door, actually pushed over the SUV along with two on-duty police officers," Auglia said.
The trapped man had serious injuries to his legs, but he was wearing his seatbelt. Paramedics got him out and took him to UPMC Mercy Hospital. His name has not been released, but he is expected to survive.
Auglia and the other rescuers burned their hands on hot exhaust pipes trying to help.
"It was smoking. It was hot. A lot of us burned our hands. It's okay, I'll burn my hands anytime to try to save a life," Auglia said.
