1 Arrested In Connection With North Versailles Bar Shooting
NORTH VERSAILLES (KDKA) – One person has been arrested in connection with a shooting at a bar in North Versailles over the weekend.
According to police, the incident happened at 1:38 a.m. Saturday at Champs Sports Grill and Lounge.
According to the criminal complaint, witnesses told police some people were thrown out of the bar after a fight.
Police say a bystander outside was shot in the jaw during crossfire. He drove himself to Forbes Hospital.
Police identified the shooter as 22-year-old Charles Payne III.
Witnesses told police they saw Payne take off in a BMW.
Police say he was trying to hide from them in nearby Walmart. Police put the store on lockdown and took five people into custody.
Payne was the only one arrested.
Two different signs are posted on the door of Champs Sports Grill and Lounge in North Versailles.
The signs say "25 and Older Only, Proper ID Required" and "No handbags permitted inside bar. Everyone will be searched."
"It doesn't belong here. Does not belong here in this shopping center," Ruth Grimes, General Manager of nearby business Kennywood Messenger Service said.
"Every weekend, I pick up trash. I have empty bottles and things in here. I do this every weekend," Grimes said.
She says Champs need to be shut down.
"We have broken windows. This is not the first incident here. There's been another shooting here. Save A Lot had their doors taken out. Aaron's had their windows broken," Grimes said.
Payne faces multiple charges including aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and criminal attempt.
He's at the Allegheny County Jail under $250,000 bond.
