"Who's the Boss?": Then and now

"Who's the Boss?" --- Was it Angela or Tony? The show always had us guessing.

Now it's celebrating 30 years since launching on ABC on Sept. 20, 1984.

The Emmy-winning sitcom, which went off the air in 1992, centered on Anthony "Tony" Micelli (Tony Danza), former second baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals. Forced to retire early because of a shoulder injury, Tony is left to raise his his daughter Samantha "Sam" (Alyssa Milano) alone after his wife dies. Committed to creating a good environment his daughter, he leaves Brooklyn, New York, and takes a job as a housekeeper for divorced ad exec Angela Bower (Judith Light) in Connecticut.

The series featured many guest stars over the years, including Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Mike Tyson, Betty White and Leslie Nielsen. A pre-"Friends" Matthew Perry also had a part on the series.

Judith Light - Then

Judith Light portrayed Angela Bower, a divorced advertising executive, who employs Tony as her housekeeper.

Light launched her career in theater, making her Broadway debut in 1975 in "A Doll's House." She joined "One Life to Live" in 1978 and went on to win a Daytime Emmy for the role as Karen Wolek on the soap. After her daytime TV success, Light signed on for "Who's the Boss?"

Judith Light - Now

The New Jersey native took on various TV roles through the '90s and was a favorite as Judge Elizabeth Donnelly in "Law & Order: Special Victims Untit." She later joined the cast of "Ugly Betty" and made a return to Broadway, where she picked up two Tony Awards.

She's currently starring in the reboot of the TV series "Dallas."

Tony Danza - Then

Tony Danza portrayed Tony Micelli, a widower and retired baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals, who takes a job as a live-in housekeeper for Angela Bower.

Danza attended college on a wrestling scholarship. Following graduation he was discovered by a producer at a boxing gymnasium in New York. Shortly after, he landed a role in "Taxi," playing a driver and part-time boxer. The show aired from 1978-1983, ending right before the start of "Who's the Boss?" In 1980, he made his movie debut in "The Hollywood Knights."

The Tony Micelli character ranked No. 23 in TV Guide's list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time" issue in 2004.

Tony Danza - Now

During his time on "Who's the Boss?" Danza also took on TV movies and hit the big screen in "She's Out of Control."

Over the years, Danza has had a steady stream of TV work, appearing on the series "The Practice" (for which he received an Emmy nod) and "Family Law." In 1998, he won the People's Choice Award for favorite male performer in a new television series for the sitcom, "The Tony Danza Show."

He stepped into the classroom as a 10th grade teacher for the 2010 reality show "Teach: Tony Danza." Throughout the '90s and 2000s Danza also spent time on Broadway, starring in the critically-acclaimed revival of "The Iceman Cometh."

Alyssa Milano - Then

Alyssa Milano played Samantha Micelli (Tony Micelli's daughter) on "Who's the Boss?"

A reported 1,500 girls auditioned for the part.

We watched as Sam went from a tomboy, often seen carrying around a baseball, to a young adult who had a quite a few boys knocking down her door.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Milano landed a role in the national tour of "Annie" at the age of 8. She went on to appear in TV commercials and off-Broadway shows before landing the role on "Who's the Boss?" at age 11. She stayed close with Tony Danza, who played her TV dad.

Alyssa Milano

The role on "Who's the Boss?" catapulted a young Milano to teen idol status and opened the door for film roles. In 1985, she starred in "Commando" as Jenny Matrix, the daughter of Arnold Schwarzenegger's character, John. She also appeared in the films "Crash Course" and "Dance 'til Dawn."

She had a part on "Melrose Place" in the '90s and later starred on the hit TV series "Charmed," which aired from 1998-2006.

More recently, she's served as a judge on "Project Runway: All Stars."

She has two children with her husband, agent David Bugliari.

Danny Pintauro - Then

Danny Pintauro, left, had a few acting gigs before joining the cast of "Who's the Boss?" -- appearing in "As the World Turns" and "Highway to Heaven."

Danny Pintauro - Now

Danny Pintauro has largely stayed out of the spotlight since his time on the sitcom.

In 1997, he came out as gay and in 2013, he married boyfriend Wil Tabares.

His Twitter description brings us up to date: "Former child celebrity, with baggage, now living in Los Angeles and travelling around selling Tupperware!"

Katherine Helmond - Then

Katherine Helmond, second left, starred as Mona Robinson, Angela's man-crazy mother with a lot of personality. She received two Emmy nominations for the part.

Helmond graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in drama.

Before "Who's the Boss?" Helmond appeared in "Car 54, Where Are You?" along with "Gunsmoke," "The Bob Newhart Show" and "Meeting of Minds." From 1977-1981 she starred in the seires "Soap."

Katherine Helmond - Now

Helmond continued to have a busy acting career following her time on the hit sitcom.

She had roles in the TV series "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Coach." In 2011, she provided the voice of Lizzie in "Cars 2."

"Who's the Boss?"

Tony and Angela's relationship had viewers glued for years -- Were they friends? Or were they more? By season 8, their relationship turned romantic, but although their romance grew -- it was implied that the pair had split -- they went different ways. In the series finale, though, Tony shows up on Angela's doorstep (just as the series began), leaving their relationship fate up for interpretation.

Judith Light told CBS News, "It was time to go. And the way the wrote the ending was so beautiful, they way the book-ended it from the beginning. It was really lovely."
