What led Jane Laut to fatally shoot her husband?
On Aug. 27, 2009, Jane Laut shot her husband of nearly 29 years outside their home in Oxnard, Calif. After telling 911 and the police there was an intruder, she soon admitted she had shot Dave and claimed it was in self-defense.
Dave Laut met his future wife, Jane Laubacher, at Santa Clara High School in Oxnard, Calif. Dave, who played football and threw shot put, was voted "Most Athletic."
Homecoming Queen
When they graduated from high school, Jane Laubacher was the homecoming queen.
College Champion
Jane and Dave began dating after graduation. Dave went on to win two NCAA titles in shot put at UCLA.
Olympic Dreams on Hold
Dave Laut was considered a top contender for shot put gold at the 1980 Olympics, until President Jimmy Carter boycotted the Games in Moscow.

Jane Laut says they were "very happy" at their December 1980 wedding.
Signs of Trouble?
Jane says Dave started physically abusing her about a year into their marriage. One day, when she forgot to buy him toiletries before a trip, she says he hit her, causing a black eye and a split lip. Jane says Dave told her "if anybody asks, tell 'em some n----r did it."

New Career Track
Dave Laut wanted to go for the gold in the 1988 Olympics, but tore tendons in both knees and failed to make the team. After retiring from athletics, he began his teaching career.
Father and Son
Jane Laut says while their relationship was happy during Michael's early years, Dave's verbal abuse escalated when Michael was 5.
Protecting Michael
Jane Laut says that Dave felt Michael couldn't do anything right. "He didn't speak right. He didn't draw right. You know, he didn't eat a sandwich right ... Neither of us could do anything right."
Janes Says She and Son Threatened
On Aug. 27, 2009, Jane and Michael returned home from the beach, and Jane says Dave was angry that they didn't ask about his day. She says she put 10-year-old Michael to bed, and then, as she had for the past two years, crawled into bed with him. She says "he [Michael] was scared" of Dave's constant yelling from the living room.

Jane Laut says shortly after, Dave began yelling in the hallway. He was holding a gun, and threatened to kill Michael. She says she focused on diverting Dave away from Michael and out of the house.
Self-Defense or Murder?
Jane Laut says while outside, she and Dave tripped and fell during a struggle for the gun, and it went off. She says she doesn't remember firing the next five shots with Dave's Ruger .22 revolver.
Jane Calls 911
Shortly after midnight, Jane Laut called 911. "Somebody's in my backyard... I heard shots...My husband's still outside," she said.
Police Respond
Police arrived at the Laut house and found Dave dead.
Jane Laut Questioned
Several hours later, Jane Laut was taken to Oxnard Police headquarters and spoke to Det. Erik Mora. She told him Dave had heard an intruder in the backyard, and she and Dave went to investigate. He told her to go back in the house, and she heard gunshots and called 911.

A New Addition
Unable to have children, Jane and Dave Laut adopted a baby boy from South Korea in 1999, and named him Michael.
Signs of a Struggle?
After being released, Jane Laut met with defense attorney Ron Bamieh. She told him Dave had been abusive for years, and had threatened to kill her and Michael that night, and she shot him in self-defense. She also showed him a large bruise on her left arm.
Jane Laut Charged
Nearly six months later, Jane Laut was arrested and charged with her husband's murder.
Out on Bond
Jane Laut was out on bond for six years, while her brother and sister-in-law had custody of Michael.
Plea Deals Offered
Jane Laut was offered five plea deals, the last of which was for a maximum six-year sentence for manslaughter. She turned them all down.

Jane Laut Takes the Stand
An emotional Jane Laut spent six days on the stand, trying to convince the jury she had suffered years of abuse, and had no choice but to kill her husband after he threatened her and their son.
Michael Laut Testifies
Jane's son Michael Laut, now 17, testified that his father had a bad temper, yelled a lot and called him names sometimes. When prosecutor Rameen Minoui, asked him if his father was ever violent with him or Jane, he said he couldn't recall.
Laut Found Guilty
On March 30, after four days of deliberation, the jury found Jane Laut guilty of first-degree murder. The mandatory sentence is 50 years-to-life in prison.
