It's a tale as old as time, but that hasn't stopped Guillermo del Toro from thinking it's time to remake "Beauty and the Beast." This live action feature is supposedly starring Emma Watson, and will more than likely get that nightmarish adult fairy tale feeling that del Toro tends to bring to his films.
What other "classics" -- we use that term very loosely -- are being remade? Check out our list of projects that will be coming to a theater near you.
"A Star is Born"
Beyonce Knowles is attached to the third remake of the 1937 original. Janet Gaynor starred in the origina, and then Judy Garland and Barbara Streisand both all played the female lead in the story. The film is set to be out by 2012, and Clint Eastwood is directing. All the previous incarnations have received love from the Academy in the past, and this might just be the vehicle that will get Beyonce the Oscar she
The original starred Patrick Schwayze and Charlie Sheen, the remake -- which has been shelved since 2010 but will be making a 2011 premiere -- stars Chris Hemsworth and Josh Peck. This pro-American movie was originally about a Soviet invasion forcing high school students to mount resistance with guerrilla warfare. The 2011 version originally replaced the Soviets with the Chinese, but in order to stay viable in the lucrative Chinese market, the filmmakers went in post-production and turned the Chinese into North Koreans.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner starred in the original in 2003, and ended up getting married even though the movie was far from magical. Already Marvel is keen on bringing Daredevil back to the silver screen.
"Death Note"
"Death Note" is a popular manga franchise in Japan, and has seen several adaptations into film there. A U.S. version with Shane Black directing will be a direct adaptation from the manga, taking little from the previous Japanese film versions.
"Dirty Dancing"
Nobody puts Baby in a corner, except for maybe original choreographer Kenny Ortega. He's at the helm of the recently announced "Dirty Dancing" remake. We doubt even he can top the classic routine performed by Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, even though he created it himself.
"Evil Dead"
We thought there was an "Evil Dead" remake already... "Evil Dead 2" anyone? Anyway, for those of you who can't get enough of the cabin-in-the-woods, don't-you-dare-recite-this-backwards-or-you'll-get-raped-by-trees, this one is for you.
"Excalibur"
Helen Mirren played opposite Nicol Williamson in the original, which was a moderate box office success. The remake is currently in pre-production over at Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures.
"Footloose"
"Footloose" was the perfect popcorn flick for its time, and the implications that banning dancing was just a ruse to ban even bigger more ridiculous things (like burning controversial books) was a great societal message. Banning public dancing today just doesn't make sense, especially in the context the new trailer gives. To be more effective they should have banned the Internet and text messaging, which were probably used to set up the dance party that led to the accident.
"Fantastic Four"
Marvel launched a "Fantastic Four" film franchise in 2005 starring Jessica Alba and Chris Evans, and produced a sequel based on the good box office performance. The second film,
"Bride of Frankenstein"
Guillermo del Toro was ruined to be redoing this classic movie, but alas this was one horror-ific idea that the director didn't want to touch. The honors are going to director Neil Burger and his writing partner Dirk Wittenborn, and the film is due out in 2015.
"Fright Night"
This remake of the 1985 horror film of the same name is capitalizing on the vampire hysteria inherent in the media now. But this is no "Twilight," and DreamWorks has put together an all-star cast including Anton Yelchin, Toni Collette, Collin Farrell, Lisa Loeb and famous siblings Dave Franco and Sandra Vergara.
"Godzilla"
Don't worry: This "Godzilla" movie is going to be completely different from all the other "Godzilla" movies. It's going to be about a giant lizard/dinosaur/sea creature destroying a city. See, totally original and different from anything the franchise has done before.
"Judge Dredd"
In order not to be confused with the original "Judge Dredd," the "Judge Dredd" remake is only going to be known as "Dredd" and will be based more off the comic book. With creative ideas like that, you wonder why they just didn't decide to come up with a completely original movie?
"Oldboy"
Spike Lee is being courted to direct this remake of the 2003 Korean cult-classic in his first foray into film since
"Short Circuit"
Before there was "The Terminator," (well, technically, because the events in the 1984 movie take place in 2029), there was "Short Circuit," the touching story of a robot who, due to a bolt of electricity, gains human emotions and self-awareness. John Connor, this should have been your warning.
"Robocop"
This remake of the popular franchise that hit screens back in 1987 and spawned several sequels. Brazilian director Jose Padilha is at the helm for this new 2013 release.
"Snow White and the Seven Dwarves"
"Snow White" is not getting redone: It's getting rebooted twice. "The Brothers Grimm: Snow White" and "Snow White and the Huntsman" are both in production, each promising to be darker than ever before. What happened to all the whistling little men and flittering birds?
"Tell No One"
This critically acclaimed 2006 French thriller from director Guillaume Canet will be remade by none other than Ben Affleck. The first was highly regarded and generated a big box office return, it will be remain to be seen if Affleck's take can do the same -- and if he's going to base the film out of Boston.
"The Lone Ranger"
Tonto, grab your horse! The new version of "The Lone Ranger" will be starring Johnny Depp as the famous sidekick and Armie Hammer as the lead gunslinger. We liked Depp in "Rango," and know he can do the West justice. But being a sidekick is unfamiliar territory for him so we're up in the air about this one.
"The Thin Man"
"The Thin Man" is a comic detective film from 1934 that was such a success it spawned five sequels. Johnny Depp will star in the remake -- wonder if that's why he's taking a backseat role in "The Lone Ranger"? -- which will be directed by Rob Marshall.
"The Three Musketeer"
One for all, and all for one! However, too many remakes of the same tired story are no fun. Despite how exciting sword-fighting is, we're doubtful that this rebook can bring box office bliss.
"The Warrors"
This remake will basically have no similarities to the original besides the name (or so they say). Instead of being set in New York City, the update will be set in L.A., and there will be no inclusion of characters or gangs from the original. For some reason though, this is still being considered a remake.
"Time Crimes"
If you haven't seen the Spanish-language "Los Cronocr
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"
We can't get enough of the Turtles in a Half Shell, but even this new dose of "Turtle Power!" is one too much. They already tried to reboot the series with a CGI-version of the Ninjas in 2007; it's far too soon to try again.
"Total Recall"
If Arnold Schwarzenegger was in it then it is probably getting remade. "Total Recall" original starred the former California governor opposite Sharon Stone. In the update, Colin Ferrell will fill the Schwarzenegger
"Conan the Barbarian"
Yet, another Schwarzenegger film that is being re-done. This remake of the 1982 film of the same name stars Jason Momoa, and will be released August 19, 2011 in competition of fellow remake "Fright Night."
"Straw Dogs"
This horror/thriller, originally starring Dustin Hoffman, is getting new life thanks to James "I always get screwed over by the leading lady" Marsden. (Seriously, it's about time that he gets the girl. Cyclops, Lon Hammond from "The Notebook": Somebody give this guy a girlfriend.)
