Tsunami wrecks Solomon Island towns

A powerful 8.0-magnitude earthquake off the Solomon Islands generated a tsunami of about 5 feet that damaged dozens of homes and left four people missing -- and presumed dead -- in the South Pacific island chain Wednesday, February 5, 2013. World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization, surveyed the damage in Lata city and the Temotu province. According to media relations director Laura Blank, the organization's staff on the ground report that some 700 households around Lata airport and five nearby coastal communities had to move to higher ground.

In two coastal communities in northeast Lata, some homes had shifted 5 to 10 meters and 90 percent had been damaged.
