Trending Halloween costumes of 2016
From outfits inspired by top movies and musicians to hit TV shows and – ahem – certain politicians, we’ve found 18 costumes expected to dominate Halloween 2016, according to the National Retail Federation and Google’s Freightgeist.
Harley Quinn was the breakout character of “Suicide Squad,” and she’s also the inspiration behind one of the top Halloween costumes this year. Dressing as a character from the DC Comics franchise is the No. 1 trend among adult costumes for 2016, per NRF.
Donald Trump
Dressing like a politician is huuuuge this October. Wearing a political figure’s attire is the third-most-popular Halloween costume among adults over 35, according to the National Retail Federation’s 2016 poll.
Hillary Clinton
That includes dressing as the Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Spirit Halloween has Clinton masks and her full attire available.
Poke-Ball
One of the hottest costume trends this year is dressing up as a Pokemon, Pokemon trainer, or even the iconic Poke-ball.
Rey
“Star Wars” costumes are very popular on Halloween for both kids and adults. Dressing as a character from a galaxy far, far away is the fifth-most-popular costume among children, according to the National Retail Federation survey.
Sexy Pikachu
If you love Pokemon, but dressing as a trainer isn’t your thing, there’s the “Sexy Pikachu” outfit for women. The costume even comes with its own matching Pikachu ears.
"Game of Thrones"
There are plenty of “Game of Thrones” characters to channel this Halloween, including Jon Snow.
Sexy Donald Trump
If the by-the-book costumes of our presidential candidates aren’t piquing your interest, there’s always the “Sexy Donald Trump” garb. This Halloween, it’s time to make America sexy again.
Wonder Woman
One of the breakout stars of the DC Universe, Wonder Woman has always been a popular Halloween costume. But now with “Batman v Superman” and her own movie on the way, Diana Price is one of the biggest 2016 options.
Superhero attire is also the No. 1 children’s costume this year, according to the NRF.
Ghostbuster
Dressing as a character from “Ghostbusters” is expected to be a popular costume for boys and girls this Halloween.
Prince
Some trick-or-treaters are expected to pay tribute to the beloved pop star by dressing as the “Purple Rain” singer, who passed away in April.
Deadpool
Deadpool — the foul-mouthed, fourth-wall breaking antihero — has made a comeback for trick-or-treaters since Ryan Reynolds’ flick came out in 2016. Dressing as a Marvel characters is the fourth-most-popular adult option, per NRF.
Nemo and Dory
Couples costumes are usually very popular on Halloween. One of the more popular tandem outfits — for adults and children — are Disney’s Nemo and Dory getup.
Dressing as an animal will be the fourth-most-popular adult option in 2016, according to NRF.
Hipster Snow White
For those who liked poison apples before they were dangerous and cool, here’s a likely choice: the “Hipster Snow White” outfit from Yandy. The wig and phone are not included.
Joker
While lots of people will be dressed as Harley Quinn this Halloween, her villainous lover is also a popular choice for adults.
Dressing as a character from “Batman” also is the fourth-most-popular children’s choice this year, NRF reports.
Witch
Dressing as a witch might be a classic, but it’s still as popular as ever. According to NRF, a witch costume is the most popular outfit among adults over 35.
Assassin
“Assassin’s Creed” has been a popular video game for the past decade. And with the live-action film coming this year, plenty of people of all sizes are dressing up as the hooded assassin of their choosing.
Video game characters, according to NRF, are the sixth-most-popular adult costumes this October.
Vampire
Wearing a vampire costume is still cool this year. It’s the fourth-most-popular attire among adults ages 18-34, according to NRF.
Baby animals
For a kid, dressing as a little animal is still extremely trendy. For kids, animals are the third-most-popular costume category this year.
