Truth or Consequences, N.M., originally called Hot Springs, is situated on the banks of the Rio Grande in the southwest portion of the state.

"T or C," as the locals call it, was named for the 1950s radio program "Truth or Consequences."

T or C is best known for its hot mineral springs, which are said to have therapeutic benefits.

This old photograph, thought to be from the 1860s or '70s, is the earliest known image of people enjoying the benefits of the hot mineral springs.

The Early Show's Rene Syler not only took a dip in the baths...

...she also tasted the mineral-rich water.

For those who aren't interested in the geothermal baths, Elephant Butte Lake State Park offers year-round hiking, fishing and water sports.
