Tom Petty
Born in Gainesville, Florida, on October 20, 1950, Tom Petty was inspired by Elvis Presley and the Rolling Stones. As a teenager he also had a talented guitar teacher in Don Felder, future lead guitarist of the Eagles.
Petty played in a succession of bands, leading to Mudcrutch, which also included Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell. When that band broke up, Petty - instead of going solo - formed a new band, with Tench, Campbell, Ron Blair and Stan Lynch
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Between 1976 and 2014 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers would release 13 studio albums and nearly a dozen live albums and compilations. Among their biggest hits were "Breakdown," "American Girl," "Don't Do Me Like That," "Refugee," "You Got Lucky," "Mary Jane's Last Dance," and "Listen to Her Heart."

The Traveling Wilburys
In 1988 Petty joined with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne to form the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys.
Their two studio albums, cheekily titled "Volume 1" and "Volume 3," featured the songs "Handle With Care," "End of the Line," "Last Night" and "She's My Baby."
The Traveling Wilburys
In 2009, for a profile for "Sunday Morning," CBS News' Anthony Mason asked Petty what it was like to write with Dylan.
"He's just as good as you think he would be," Petty said. "I was there for a reason, so I had to get past his Bob-ness, you know?"
"His Bob-ness? Well, how do you get past that? I mean, it's gotta be intimidating, sitting down with him."
"Well, it is. But he's a person."
"Full Moon Fever"
Petty's first solo album, "Full Moon Fever" (1989), wasn't entirely a solo effort - Heartbreakers Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench and Howie Epstein all contributed, as did George Harrison and Roy Orbison.
The album contained what may be Petty's most recognizable song, the Top 10 hit "Free Fallin," as well as "I Won't Back Down," "Runnin' Down a Dream," and "Love Is a Long Road."
