Throwback Thursday: A look back in history on August 18.
On August 18, 1029, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote. Suffragettes, like the women seen in this photo from 1912, had campaigned for years for this moment. One 24-year-old legislator named Harry Burn, who followed his mother’s wishes to vote for ratification, cast the deciding vote.

Miss Deneuve, 21, is a former girlfriend of French Movie Director Roger Vadim, once husband to Brigitte Bardot and recently wed to Jane Fonda. Bailey, 27, is responsible for the rise of lovely Jean Shrimpton to the top as a photographic model in the British high fashion world.
Woodstock 1969
The crowd at the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival held on a 600-acre pasture in the Catskill Mountains near White Lake in Bethel, N.Y., in August 1969.
The festival, billed as “Thee Days of Peace and Music,” started on Friday, August 15 and cconcluded with a mid-morning set by Jimi Hendrix on August 18 with Jimi Hendrix. More than 450,000 persons attended.
Renee Richards
Dr. Renee Richards, who underwent a sex-change operation, said on August 18, 1976 in Newport Beach, California, that she would not take the prescribed sex test to enter the U.S Open championships at Forest Hills, New York. Dr. Richards said that she would appeal the ruling requiring such examinations.
