Sweden's Annika Sorenstam created a stir in 2003 when she announced she would play in the the Colonial - making her the first woman in a PGA tournament since 1945. In this July 30, 2001, photo, she and teammate Tiger Woods read their putt during the "Battle at Bighorn," a one-round, alternate-shot match against Karrie Webb and David Duval in Palm Desert, Calif.
The last woman to play in a PGA event was Babe Didrikson Zaharias. In this photo, Zaharias shoots from a trap on the ninth hole at the Los Angeles Open golf tournament on Jan. 5, 1945. Zaharias was the only woman to qualify for the $13,333,33 tournament. She went on to score a 76. No woman has played in a men's event since - until Annika Sorenstam turned up at The Colonial.
