Super Bowl XLVIII: By the numbers

The Seattle Seahawks are one of 14 teams to have never won a Super Bowl. 

In 1976, the Seahawks  joined the NFL as an expansion team but until this year, the team had only been to the big game once in nearly four decades – in 2005, under Mike Holmgren. That year, they lost Super Bowl XL to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 21-10.

The Denver Broncos have won two Super Bowls. After losing four big games, including three in the 1980s, quarterback John Elway finally led the Broncos to consecutive titles in 1997 and 1998. 

Denver beat the defending champion Green Bay Packers 31-24 in Super Bowl XXXII. The next season, Elway was named Super Bowl MVP after leading the Broncos to a 34-19 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

This will be Peyton Manning's third Super Bowl and first as a member of the Denver Broncos. The former Colts quarterback, now 37, beat the Chicago Bears to win the title in 2007 but lost to the Saints in Super Bowl XLIV in 2010.

Seahawks star cornerback Richard Sherman led the NFL with eight interceptions during the regular season. 

Sherman, whose angry rant after the NFC championship game sparked a national debate over sportsmanship and racial attitudes, was calm, cool and collected at Super Bowl media day.

 "People think I'm a loudmouth, an angry guy," Sherman said. "That's a big misconception."

Broncos' cornerback Champ Bailey is finally playing in a Super Bowl after 15 seasons in the league. One of the best defensive backs to ever play in the NFL, Bailey has been selected to 12 Pro Bowls and has 52 career interceptions.

According to CBS New York, the low temperature on Super Bowl Sunday is expected to be about 28 degrees. Currently there is no snow in the forecast, which calls for mostly cloudy skies. Kickoff for the big game is 6:30 p.m. ET.

It's about 45 miles from MetLife Stadium – site of Super Bowl XLVIII – to Belford, N.J., the hometown of Denver Broncos starting running back Knowshon Moreno. 

Moreno graduated from Middletown South as New Jersey’s career leader in total touchdowns, then starred at the University of Georgia before being drafted by the Broncos in 2009.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was picked 140th overall in the 2010 draft – the Major League Baseball draft, that is. Wilson played two seasons in the minors for the Colorado Rockies before deciding his future was as an NFL quarterback. Wise choice.

Seahawks' star running back Marshawn Lynch has racked up 249 rushing yards in the postseason, after tallying 1,257 in the regular season. But Lynch, who recently signed an endorsement deal with Skittles, doesn't always rack up big numbers. At Super Bowl media day, he left after just six minutes.

The capacity seating for MetLife Stadium, site of Super Bowl XLVIII, is 82,500. The $1.6 billion stadium is the first non-domed Super Bowl venue in a cold weather city. Will it be the last?

4 million

A 30-second ad during the game this year will cost more than $4 million. Last year the average price for the same ad was $3.8 million. As recently as 2011, the price was "just" $3 million. The price for the same spot in 1967 for the inaugural Super Bowl? $42,000.

99 million

Fans bet an unprecedented $99 million on the Super Bowl last year, and the Nevada gambling industry expects to break the record again Sunday, barring a snowstorm. Nevada sports books collected record amounts of football wagers during the tail end of 2013.

169 million

About 169 million people are expected to watch the Super Bowl, according to Wallethub.com. The game will be broadcast in 180 countries and in more than 30 languages. One 30-second ad this year will cost more than $4 million.

1.25 billion

Roughly 1.25 billion chicken wings will be consumed and that the average fan will take in roughly 1,200 calories during the game, according to Wallethub. Dominos and Pizza Hut are also expected to sell 29 million slices of pizza
