Strangest weapons used in crimes
Police say a Portland man assaulted at least three customers in a Toys R' Us store with a toy light saber on Dec. 14, 2011. The 33-year-old man, David Allen Canterbury, was taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation after the incident. CBS affiliate KVAL reports Sgt. Pete Simpson says officers found the man, still swinging the light saber, in the parking lot of the store. One officer tried to use a taser, but it proved ineffective. A second officer tried to stun the assailant with his Taser but Canterbury broke one of the wires on the device with the light saber. Simpson said the officers then wrestled the suspect to the ground as he yelled incoherent statements. Authorities said Canterbury received citations for three counts of assault, and one count each of disorderly conduct, theft, and resisting arrest.
Woman attempts to disarm gunman with purse
Ginger Littleton bravely attempted to disarm a gunman at a Florida school board meeting using only her crocodile purses on Dec. 14, 2010. Clay Duke, 56, took her and her fellow board members hostage at a Bay District School Board meeting in Panama City, Fla., to protest his wife's firing. He asked all women and children to leave the room, but while Duke was ranting to the male members of the school board Littleton reentered the room, then tried to disarm him. She failed in her attempt but remained unharmed. Duke took committed suicide after a security guard wounded him. The purse was later sold for charity on eBay for $13,100.Woman pelts robbers with fruit
On July 20, 2012, an 80-year-old Massachusetts woman fought off two robbers trying to hold up a New Bedford market by pelting them with fruit.According to CBS Boston, Otilia Martins was working inside the market, which belongs to her son-in-law, when she saw two masked men holding up the clerk at gunpoint. Martins started pelting the men with mangoes and apples. One of the suspects responded by pistol whipping Martins before taking off. Martins' son-in-law, Manuel Nogueira, who owns the Continental Market, was outside at the time and heard the commotion, CBS Boston reports. He managed to chase down one of the suspects, identified by SouthCoastToday.com as 22-year-old Eduardo Torres-Lopez. Police reportedly found the other suspect, 24-year-old Jesse DosSantos, hiding in an apartment building, on the second floor where he lived.
Samurai sword used in robbery
Kansas City police say a man robbed a Church's Chicken restaurant on Oct. 23, 2012, armed with a samurai sword. The man demanded money from the cash register at the 55th Street and Prospect Avenue restaurant before leaving in a brown, two-toned Chevrolet pickup truck.Machete used in Calif. attack
A Southern California man was sentenced to 27 years to life in prison for a machete attack last year that left one of his roommates dead and another seriously injured. Carlos Arias Donis was convicted last month of second-degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated mayhem. Prosecutors say the 26-year-old gardener attacked two of his roommates with a machete shortly after 1 a.m. on Aug. 25, 2010. Fernando Garcia died at the scene while the second victim received serious head injuries. Sheriff's deputies arrested Donis after he fled the scene.
Bus driver stabbed in face with pen
Taniesha Nicole Twyne, accused of stabbing a bus driver in the face with a pen on Feb. 20, 2012. Cobb County spokeswoman AikWah Leow said the driver, Damian Haney, 39, was suspended with pay for not following protocol during the altercation that led to his stabbing. Leow says that instead of getting involved when Twyne allegedly got into an argument over a cell phone with another passenger, the driver should have stayed in his seat and called dispatch, which would have called 911. Police say Twyne grabbed a pen from the driver's pocket and stabbed him several times in the face.Naked man apprehended after samurai sword standoff
Coco Bennett, 29, was arrested on Jan. 1, 2013 after he stripped off his clothes and had a three-hour standoff with San Jose police while wielding a large Samurai sword, authorities said. Larry Spurling, a 50-year-old western Nebraska man, was arrested on Sept. 30 after his wife accused him of attacking her with a sandwich. Spurling was charged with disturbing the peace after his wife called 911 late Sunday and reported that her husband pushed her down during an argument and rubbed a sandwich in her face, the arrest affidavit reports.Stiletto stabbing
Ana Lilia Trujillo, 45, was arrested in June 2013 for fatally stabbed her 59-year-old boyfriend, Alf Stefan Andersson, at least 25 times in the face with a stiletto heel. She was found guilty of murder on April 8, 2014, and faces life in prison.Antifreeze in steroids
A Delaware woman was charged with first-degree murder on March 13, 2014, after police said she admitted lacing her husband's steroid injections with antifreeze.
State police say 44-year-old Jamie Baker murdered 42-year-old James Baker, who died in September 2013. An autopsy revealed that James Baker had a chemical found in antifreeze in his system, and his death was ruled homicide by poisoning.
Following
his death, police reportedly found syringes and liquid steroids in his
home. They say he had ordered the steroids through the Internet. Authorities
searched the home again and said Jamie Baker told officers
that she had used a hypodermic syringe to extract antifreeze from a
bottle and then injected it into her husband's bottles of steroids.
