Steven Holcomb
Steven Holcomb, the longtime U.S. bobsledding star who drove to three Olympic medals after beating a disease that nearly robbed him of his eyesight, was found dead in Lake Placid, New York, on May 6, 2017. He was 37.

A degenerative eye disorder forced bobsled driver Steven Holcomb to the brink of retiring from the sport he loved. But cutting-edge surgeries performed by Dr. Boxer Wachler in 2007 and 2008 put Holcomb on the path to recovery. Within just a year of the procedures, Holcomb became the first American to win a world championship in the four-man bobsled since 1959.
