According to UConn police, Jasper Howard got caught up in a fight between two groups that included students and non-students. The fight broke out just after a fire alarm went off in a student center, forcing around 300 people to evacuate from a university-sponsored dance. Somewhere in the melee, Howard was fatally stabbed. It's not yet clear if Howard was part of the altercation or just caught standing near it.

Jasper Howard told his girlfriend's father that he was "going to be there for [the baby] 100 percent," after Daneisha Freeman, the 18-year-old seen in this picture, learned she was pregnant. Freeman said she and Howard planned to name the baby Jamiya Tia Howard.

On Oct. 18, 2009, the night of the deadly knife attack, Daneisha Freeman stayed at UConn football player Jasper Howard's apartment. She texted his phone around midnight. "Have fun. Be safe and good." He never texted back. According to UConn police, it was around that time that Howard was fighting for his life, and losing.
