Silly Season
Whether you're Scarlett Johansson or a Thai hill tribe villager, it's not easy to look good during the dog days of summer. But the people on the following pages managed. At left, Paeng, age 5, blows bubbles at home in Chiang Dao, Thailand, on July 13, 2006. Paeng is a member of the once-remote Long Neck Padaung hill tribe, some of whose members have moved to new villages open to tourists.

Silly season in Southern Germany and Austria can lead to "Dirndlfliegen," or "Dirndl Flying." The grand prize was, of course, a dirndl.

People with a real instinct for fashion find a stylish way to stay cool. New Yorker Jen Anderson unfurled a fan while waiting in a subway station on Lexington Avenue on Aug. 3, 2006.
Across the ocean, a Londoner got the same bright idea. A woman on a bus uses an ornate fan to keep cool on a bus on July 18, 2006, a day on which temperatures soared to record highs across Britain.
Scarlett Johansson beat the heat by braiding her hair for the premiere of her new movie, "Scoop," at the Museum of Modern Art in New York on July 26, 2006.
Not Miami Beach; Hyde Park. This is not the way people usually dress for a stroll along the Serpentine, but it worked for this couple on July 18, 2006, a day of record-breaking heat in London.
