An American Jew whose father's extensive collection of unique and rare posters was seized by the Nazis and only returned after years of legal battles is now looking to sell. A German court awarded the collection to Peter Sachs, who'd fought to get back the collection of some 4,000 posters from the German Historical Museum, in March 2012 The posters includes advertisements and propaganda dating back to the late 19th century and are worth $5.75 million to $20.44 million, according to the Associated Press. Starting on Jan. 18, 2013, auctioneer company Guernsey's will conduct the first of three no minimums auctions at the Bohemian National Hall in New York City. The auction ends on Jan. 20.
The posters were seized from Hans Sachs' home in 1938 on the orders of the Nazi Propaganda Minister, who wanted them for his own museum, the AP reports. Born in 1881, Sachs was a dentist who began collecting posters while in high school and by 1905 was Germany's leading private poster collector. After the seizure, he was arrested and thrown in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp north of Berlin. After two weeks, he was released and fled to America with his family.
After World War II, Sachs assumed the collection had been destroyed and accepted small compensation from West Germany in 1961. He later learned that part of the collection had survived and had been turned over to an East Berlin museum. The posters became part of the German Historical Museum's collection in 1990 after the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall. Hans Sachs died in 1974 without ever seeing the posters again.
