Tragic Plane Crashes
A total of 270 people were killed when a bomb ripped apart Pan Am Flight 103 over the Scottish town of Lockerbie on December 21, 1988. A file photo taken the following day shows rescue personnel carrying a body away from the crash site.
March 28, 1977
Aerial view taken March 28, 1977, shows the wreckage of KLM Flight 4805 and Pan Am Flight 1736, which collided the previous day above Santa Cruz De Tenerife airport in the Canary Islands, killing 580 passengers and crew members and injuring many more.
The collision remains the deadliest accident in aviation history.

The Boeing 747, with 229 aboard, went down the night before, shortly after takeoff from John F. Kennedy airport in New York, bound for Paris.
May 25, 1979
American Airlines Flight 191 crashed on May 25, 1979, moments after takeoff from Chicago. All 258 passengers and 13 crew on board were killed, along with two people on the ground.
As the aircraft reached takeoff speed, the number one engine separated, damaging both the wing and hydraulic systems, causing the plane to roll as it tried to ascend.

The TransAsia Airways ATR 72-600 turboprop airplane crashed into the Keelung River shortly after taking off from Taipei Songshan airport.
Over 50 people were on board the aircraft when it clipped a bridge and crashed into the river.
43 perished in the crash. It was the second deadly crash in 6 months for the airline.

Hijacked United Airlines Flight 175 from Boston crashes into the south tower of the World Trade Center and explodes at 9:03 a.m. on September 11, 2001 in New York City.
The crash of two airliners hijacked by terrorists loyal to al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and subsequent collapse of the twin towers killed some 2,800 people.
Two other planes were also hijacked on 9/11. One crashed into the Pentagon and the other into a field in Shanksville, Pa., killing hundreds of people.

The Airbus A300 passenger jet crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all 260 people on board and five people on the ground.

The crash resulted in at least 98 deaths, 2 of which occurred on impact when the plane ploughed through a neighborhood, striking at least four houses before skidding into a paddy, in the village of Geplak. Two people on the ground were killed and at least 70 others were taken to a local hospital. Authorities believe that there is still 1 missing body.
