101-year-old becomes U.S. citizen

Juana Hernandez was part of the citizenship ceremony that included 140 others and is the last swearing in service of the year for the Miami office.

Spain - Els Enfarinats festival

The battle takes place between two groups, a group of married men called 'Els Enfarinats' which take control of the village for one day pronouncing a whole host of ridiculous laws and fining the citizens that infringe them and then another group called 'La Oposicio' which try to restore order. At the end of the day, the money collected from the fines is donated to charitable causes in the village.
The festival has been celebrated since 1981 after the town of Ibi recovered the tradition but the origins remain unknown.

NY - Boy salutes father's casket

McCrossen was Lemm's partner in the NYPD Warrant Squad. Lemm was one of six U.S. troops killed by a suicide bomber near Bagram air base in Afghanistan.
Spain - La Festa del Pi

Early in the morning men and women born in Centelles, who are named 'Galejadors' wear their traditional costume with the Catalan red hat known as 'Barretina' and carry muskets as they walk into the forest to chop down a pine tree, load it on an ox cart and take it to the church in the village. The pine tree is decorated with five bouquets of apples and wafers and hung inside a church until Jan. 6.
The tradition has been documented since 1751 and it is believed its origins are related to the trees and the pagan worship of fertilization related to the winter solstice.

The march marks the curfew in Cizre and fourth anniversary of the Dec. 28, 2011 killing of 34 Turkish-Kurdish civilians working as smugglers at the Turkey-Iraq border, in a botched raid by Turkish military jets, known as the Roboski strike, that mistook the group for Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants.

Turkey - Mourners

Authorities imposed the curfew in Dargecit in the province of Mardin on Dec. 11 to back up a large-scale military operation against suspected Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) rebels in the southeast. Special police forces maintained a heavy presence while hundreds of people also attended the funeral in Dargecit of one man killed in the fighting.

As areas of the North of England suffer from the affects of flooding, the UK is set to have the warmest December on record, according to the Met Office.
Brussels arrests

The Eastern Star

A formal inquiry has concluded that freak weather led to the sinking of a Yangtze River cruise ship in June that killed 442 people and recommended that the captain be investigated for possible crimes, media reported.
