Deadly Fort Lauderdale shooting
A gunman opened fire at the Fort Lauderdale airport on Friday, killing five people and wounding eight before being taken into custody, officials said. The gunman was identified as Esteban Santiago-Ruiz, 26, who had active-duty military identification on him and was born in New Jersey, law enforcement sources told CBS News. Without identifying the gunman, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said he was unharmed and being interviewed by FBI agents and sheriff’s deputies.

The suspect

The 26-year-old was a combat engineer in the Alaska Army National Guard from Nov. 2104 to Aug. 2016, when he was received a general discharge for unsatisfactory performance, Alaska Air National Guard officials confirmed.
The suspect
Santiago-Ruiz previously served in the Puerto Rico National Guard and was deployed to Iraq from April 23, 2010 to Feb. 19, 2011, officials said.
