A powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on August 24, killing at least one person and damaging pagodas in the ancient city of Bagan, officials said. The quake, which the US Geological Survey said hit at a depth of 84 kilometres (52 miles), was also felt across neighboring Thailand, India and Bangladesh, sending panicked residents rushing onto the streets.

Teenager Irfan Ahmed was killed after he was hit in the chest by a teargas canister fired by Indian security forces to quell pro-freedom protests in the Kashmiri capital on August 21.
