Photo of drowned migrant boy shocks world
A paramilitary police officer carries the lifeless body of Aylan Kurdi, 3, after a number of migrants died and a smaller number were reported missing after boats carrying them to the Greek island of Kos capsized, near the Turkish resort of Bodrum early Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015. The family -- Abdullah, his wife Rehan and their two boys, 3-year-old Aylan and 5-year-old Galip -- embarked on the perilous boat journey only after their bid to move to Canada was rejected. The tides also washed up the bodies of Rehan and Galip on Turkey's Bodrum peninsula Wednesday, Abdullah survived the tragedy.
This photograph swept social media and global news outlets, spawning sympathy and outrage at the perceived inaction of developed nations in helping refugees.

Abdullah Kurdi, father of 3-year-old Aylan Kurdi, cries as he leaves a morgue in Mugla, Turkey, September 3, 2015. The family of Aylan, a Syrian toddler whose body washed up on a Turkish beach, had been trying to emigrate to Canada after fleeing the war-torn town of Kobani, one of their relatives told a Canadian newspaper on Thursday. His 5-year-old brother Galip and mother Rehan, 35, also died after their boat capsized while trying to reach the Greek island of Kos. His father, Abdullah, was found semi-conscious and taken to hospital near Bodrum, according to Turkey's Sabah newspaper.

The death of Kurdi - along with his 5-year old brother Galip, his mother and nine others - has done little to deter migrants, many refugees from war in the Middle East, from taking to small boats for the 4 km (2 mile) nocturnal crossing to Kos from Bodrum. Coastguards halted three boats carrying 57 Syrians, Afghans and Pakistanis late on Thursday, impounding the vessels and taking the passengers back to Turkey, where they spent the night sleeping under blankets in the yard of the coastguard building.
