Tyree Lincoln Smith, 31, admitted killing a homeless man with an ax and eating his brain and eyes in a vacant Connecticut apartment in December 2011. Smith was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to up to 60 years in a maximum-security psychiatric hospital in September 2013.
Wisconsin man Jeffrey Dahmer was accused of murdering 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. His murders allegedly involved rape, dismemberment, necrophilia and cannibalism. The court found Dahmer sane and guilty on 15 counts of murder on February 1992. He was sentenced to 15 life terms, totaling 957 years in prison, which was the maximum penalty available in Wisconsin. He was beaten to death in jail by an inmate on Nov. 28, 1994.
Florida police identified 31-year-old Rudy Eugene as the naked man who was fatally shot by an officer on May 26, 2012, after Eugene refused to stop chewing another naked man's face on a downtown Miami highway ramp.
Authorities said 28-year-old New York City police officer Gilberto Valle plotted to kidnap, rape, torture and eat the body parts of several women. According to a criminal complaint, Valle kept files on his computer about more than 100 women, including their photos and address. Valle was arrested on Oct. 24, 2012 and was indicted by a federal grand jury on Nov. 16, 2012, on charges of kidnapping conspiracy and illegally accessing a law-enforcement database.
Alexander Kinyua, 21, was arrested on May 30, 2012 after he allegedly killed his housemate and then ate the victim's heart and part of his brain. Police said Kinyua reportedly hid the head and hands of the dead man in the basement of his family's Maryland home.
Luka Rocco Magnotta, a 29-year-old porn actor and model, was arrested on June 4, 2012 in connection to the death and dismemberment of a Canada man whose body parts were mailed to Canadian political parties and schools. He pleaded not guilty to murder charges on June 2012. Montreal police said video footage of what authorities believe to be the killing seems to show the suspect eating the body. It did not show anyone eating the body but did show a man using a fork and knife on it.
Los Angeles chef David Viens, 49, was found guilty on Sept. 27, 2012 of murdering his 39-year-old wife sometime before she vanished in October 2009. Her body was never found. Viens is accused of boiling her body for four days to get rid of the evidence.
Otty Sanchez, 33, was charged with capital murder in the death of her 3-week old son, who authorities found decapitated and grossly mutilated in a bedroom of her sister's Texas house on July 26, 2009. Police said Sanchez chewed off three of her infant's toes and ate parts of the brain. She allegedly used a knife and two swords in the attack. She was found not guilty by reason of insanity on July 1, 2010 and ordered to stay at a maximum-security mental facility for indefinite confinement.
A 26-year-old German man only identified as "Jan O." was sentenced to life in prison on June 27, 2011, after reportedly confessing to eating the flesh and drinking the blood of one of his teenage victims. He was convicted of murder in the November 2011 slayings of a 14-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy. During the murder trial Jan O. admitted to committing "vampiristic" acts both before and after they died, and confessed to licking blood from a wound of the girl and biting flesh from her neck. He allegedly killed the boy five days later.
California woman and former model Omaima Aree Nelson, whom authorities compared to the fictional Hannibal Lecter, was convicted of killing her 56-year-old husband and eating his remains in 1991. She is serving a sentence of 25 years to life. Officials said police discovered suitcases and plastic bags soaked with dark liquid from the victim's body parts, a fry cooker containing his hands and his entrails in Nelson's corvette.
