NFL Athletes in trouble with the law

Aldon Smith of the San Francisco 49ers has been arrested multiple times.

His most recent arrest was in August 2015 when he was arrested for an alleged hit and run, DUI and vandalism charges.

In April 2014 he was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport after authorities said he became belligerent during a security screening and threatened that he had a bomb.

In October 2013 he was charged with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a party at his home in June 2012.

In September 2013 Smith was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and marijuana possession in San Jose after driving into a tree.

Warren Sapp

Former NFL lineman and Hall of Famer Warren Sapp was arrested on suspicion of soliciting a prostitute and assault.

Phoenix police say the 42-year-old Sapp was taken into custody at a downtown hotel. He was booked into jail on two counts of assault and charges of soliciting prostitution.

Sapp is a broadcaster with the NFL Network.

He played for Tampa Bay and Oakland and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013.

A woman told officers that she and another woman were working as escorts and an argument over money in a guest's room turned physical. Both women suffered minor injuries "consistent with a struggle," police said.

Police say Sapp told investigators he had paid one of the women for sex but he denied any assault.

Sapp was suspended indefinitely without pay from NFL Network.

Adrian Peterson

After it was reported Sept. 12, 2014 that Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson had been indicted in Texas for "reckless or negligent injury" when he disciplined his 4-year-old son with a tree branch, the 29-year-old star athlete was deactivated by the Vikings pending the resolution of his legal issues.

Peterson was previously arrested in an unrelated incident on July 7, 2012 for resisting arrest.

Ray Rice

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, 27, was dropped by his team and suspended indefinitely by the NFL following the September release of elevator surveillance footage from February 2014 which showed Rice punch his then-fiancee, Janay Palmer, knocking her unconscious in Atlantic City, N.J. He avoided trial on an assault charge in May when he was accepted into a diversionary program to address his domestic abuse.

The NFL's initial handling of the incident drew criticism from fans and in the media after Rice was originally given just a 2-game suspension by the league.

Jonathan Dwyer

Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer was arrested Sept. 17, 2014 in Phoenix on charges of aggravated assault, criminal damage and preventing someone from calling 911 stemming from two alleged incidents in July. A 27-year-old woman later told police that Dwyer had sent her a photo of a knife and also described threatening text messages she had received from the running back. She ultimately left the state with her child.

Greg Hardy

Greg Hardy, the Carolina Panthers defensive end who earned a jury conviction in July for choking and threatening to kill his then-girlfriend, was deactivated by his team before a game against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 14 amid league-wide scrutiny about domestic violence. He had played the week before.

John Boyett

John Boyett, a rookie safety for the Indianapolis Colts, was arrested Sept. 2, 2013 on public intoxication and other charges, according to CBS Chicago.

An Indianapolis police report says the 23-year-old was upset he was not allowed into a downtown nightclub because he had too much to drink.

The report says when an officer attempted to arrest Boyett, he ran.

After he was caught, Boyett repeatedly told officers "You can't arrest me, I'm a Colts player."

The Colts waived safety him a day later.

Ausar Walcott

Ausar Walcott, a rookie free agent for the NFL's Cleveland Browns, was arrested Tuesday, June 25, 2013 and charged with attempted murder after allegedly punching a man outside a gentleman's club in New Jersey, the North Jersey Record reports.

Walcott, 23, of Hackensack, N.J., is accused of punching a man in the head around 3 a.m. Sunday, according to the paper.

The victim, Derrick Jones, 24, was taken to the Harlem Hospital Center in Manhattan where he was listed in critical condition Tuesday, the paper reports.

Walcott turned himself in to police Tuesday morning and was charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault and third degree endangering an injured victim. His bail was set at $500,000.

Aaron Hernandez

Aaron Hernandez, a 23-year-old tight-end for the NFL's New England Patriots, was charged with first-degree murder Wednesday in the death of his friend, Boston semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, in an industrial park about a mile from Hernandez's North Attleborough, Mass. home on June 17. Following his arrest, the Patriots released him from the team.

Jovan Belcher

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and committed suicide on Dec. 1, 2012, in front of his coach and general manager after first thanking them for everything they had done for him, police said.

Da'Quan Bowers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Da`Quan Bowers was arraigned on Feb. 18, 2013 on charges of criminal possession of a weapon after he was arrested at a New York airport when police found a .40-caliber handgun in his carry-on bag. Authorities said he was arrested at LaGuardia Airport as he was about to board a US Airways flight to Raleigh, N.C. He posted $10,000 bond. Bowers played college football for Clemson University and was chosen by the Buccaneers in the 2011 NFL draft.

Titus Young

Titus Young, a former Detroit Lions wide receiver, was arrested for the third time in a week on Friday, May 10, 2013, according to police. Lt. Joe Balicki, spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff's department, said the 23-year-old Young was arrested May 10 in San Clemente, Calif. after running from police and putting up a fight when they tried to detain him. Young was charged with attempted burglary, assault of a police officer and resisting arrest. Young was also arrested... twice... on the previous Sunday. The first arrest on Sunday, May 5, 2013 was for suspicious of drunken driving. The second arrest, which happened later that day, occurred after he allegedly tried to remove his vehicle from a tow yard.

Young was drafted by the Lions in 2011 but was released from the team in February 2013 for insubordinate behavior and fighting with his teammates.

Josh Brent

Dallas Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent was charged with intoxication manslaughter after teammate Jerry Brown was killed in a one-car accident early Saturday, Dec. 7, 2012.

Jimmy Smith

Former Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Jimmy Smith began serving a six-year prison term in Mississippi for drug possession and weapons charges in late March 2013, online state corrections records show. The 44-year-old Smith was sentenced to two years for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and four years for possession of cocaine, records show. His tentative release date is listed as Nov. 8, 2018.

Smith has had multiple run-ins with police since his playing days, and was sentenced to 18 months of probation for a drug possession charge in 2009 in Jacksonville.

Chad Johnson

Police said Miami Dolphins receiver Chad Johnson was arrested on a simple domestic battery charge, after being accused of head-butting his newlywed wife during an argument in front of their home in Davie, Fla. He was released on $2,500 bond early Aug. 12, 2012, nearly a day after he was arrested. The six-time Pro Bowl receiver was released by the Dolphins later that evening.

Aaron Berry

Detroit Lions player Aaron Berry was arrested in Pennsylvania on July 21, 2012 on three charges of simple assault. Cpl. Kyle Gautsch of the Harrisburg Police Department said there "was a weapon allegedly brandished during the incident."

This was the second time Berry was arrested by police during the off season. He was arrested in Harrisburg on June 23 under suspicion of DUI, failure to stop and render aid from an accident and other counts. He was set to enter a diversionary program in that case.

Marshawn Lynch

California police arrested Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch early in the morning morning on July 14, 2012 after he was allegedly seen weaving from lane to lane on a California highway. California Highway Patrol said Lynch had two near collisions with vehicles driving in adjacent lanes. When he was pulled over he reportedly showed no signs of intoxication. After multiple field sobriety tests, Lynch was arrested and booked into jail under investigation of DUI, where he was cited and later released.

Dez Bryant

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant was arrested on July 16, 2012 on a family violence charge involving his mother, Texas police said. CBS Dallas reports that Bryant was visiting his mother on July 14 when she told him to leave the house. Bryant allegedly got upset and assaulted her. Bryant turned himself in to police when he learned they obtained an arrest warrant for him. He posted a $1,500 bail and was quickly released.

David Diehl

New York City police arrested New York Giants offensive lineman David Diehl on June 9, 2012 after he allegedly drove a BMW into four parked cars in Queens. There were no injuries. Diehl stayed at the scene of the accident and police took took to the precinct where he was charged after a Breathalyzer test allegedly showed he was above the legal limit. Diehl was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Michael Vick

NFL star Michael Vick was sentenced in 2007 to up to 23 months in jail for running a dog fighting organization. The details of the dog fighting ring prompted a public backlash against the once-popular Vick who was suspended from the NFL and dropped by his sponsors. Vick made an extraordinary comeback, however, recently signing a six-year, $100 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2011, Vick joined federal lawmakers and the Humane Society of the United States calling on Congress to pass H.R. 2492, the Animal Fighting Spectator Prohibition Act. The legislation would prohibit knowing attendance at organized animal fights and impose additional penalties for causing a minor to attend such events.

Plaxico Burress

Plaxico Burress was convicted of criminal possession of a handgun after he accidentally shot himself in the leg with a gun tucked into his sweatpants in 2008. He was released from jail in June 2011.

Eric Naposki

Eric Naposki, former NFL linebacker, was found guilty in July 2011 of killing Southern California millionaire William McLaughlin in his Newport Beach home in 1994.

Christopher Owens

Atlanta Falcons cornerback Christopher Owens was investigated by Gwinnett County, Ga. police in June 2011 for allegedly destroying his ex-girlfriend's apartment and dousing her most valuable possessions in bleach.

Raheem Brock

Raheem Brock was arrested in Philadelphia in June 2011 after allegedly walking out on a $27 bar bill. He supposedly had a minor scuffle with police shortly after he left the bar. He was arrested and charged with theft and resisting arrest.

Cedric Benson

Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson was arrested Saturday, May 3, 2008 in Austin, Texas. Benson allegedly failed a sobriety test while operating a 30-foot boat, then resisted arrest before being hit with pepper spray and dragged ashore by officers. Benson was charged with boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest. Then in June, only a month later, Benson was charged with a DUI. In July of this year, Benson was arrested in Texas and charged with assault causing bodily injury to a family member. He was sentenced to 20 days in prison, but was release on Sept., 3 after serving only 5 days.

Onterrio Smith

Onterrio Smith, former running back for the Minnesota Vikings, was detained at the airport in Minneapolis-St. Paul for carrying dried urine and a device reportedly used for cheating drug tests.

JaMarcus Russell

Former Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell was charged with possession of a controlled substance after being arrested in his home in 2010 for possession of codeine syrup. JaMarcus was nabbed as part of an undercover narcotics investigation, according to police.

Randy Moss

Minnesota Vikings receiver Randy Moss was arrested Sept. 24, 2002 after being accused of bumping a police traffic officer with his car. The officer tried to stop Moss from making an illegal turn, and Moss used his car to slowly push the officer along the street.

Pat McAfee

Indianapolis Colts punter, Pat McAfee, was arrested for public intoxication after being found shirtless and wet. He was supposedly attempting to break into a car. The police were called on him when the woman who owned the car spotted him in the act.

These members of the Minnesota Vikings were all accused of being connected to a so-called 'Vikings sex boat.' The players allegedly rented a boat on Lake Minnetonka which they filled with hired prostitutes to party with them.

Shaun Rogers

Cleveland Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers was arrested in 2010 at Cleveland Hopkins International airport after a loaded gun was found in his carry-on luggage, according to police reports.

Kenyatta Jones

Former New England Patriots offensive lineman Kenyatta Jones was arrested in 2008 and charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, obstruction and trespassing. Jones was being escorted by security from a nightclub for attempting to urinate on the dance floor when he shoved an officer into a wall and was eventually tasered.

Aqib Talib

Police in Garland, Texas, say Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib turned himself in on a warrant in March 2011 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police said Talib attempted to physically assault Shannon Billings, Talib's sister's boyfriend, and both Talib and his mother Okolo Talib shot at Billings. Billings was not hit by the gunfire. The two were reportedly in an argument when the altercation took place.

Kenny Britt

In April 2011, Tennessee Titans wide receiver, Kenny Britt was arrested in his hometown of Bayonne, N.J. and charged with eluding an officer and hindering apprehension when police accused him of driving his Porsche 71 mph in a 50-mph zone before leaving the officer. Britt was later found walking on a side street away from his car. His charges were reduced to a misdemeanor and a fine.

A day after those charges were reduced, two plainclothes officers at a Hoboken car wash smelled marijuana and accused Britt of holding a rolled cigar they thought was the source. Britt was wrestled to the floor and handcuffed, and police believed a man with Britt may have disposed of the cigar.

Britt's charges included resisting arrest, and he faces a Sept. 20, 2011 court date after pleading not guilty.

Luke Driscoll

Luke Driscoll, a St. Louis Rams scout, was reportedly arrested in February in Indianapolis for exposing his genitals to a female police officer. According to a police report, Driscoll was urinating on a downtown building when two police officers approached and said Driscoll then exposed himself to the female officer. He was charged with public nudity and intoxication.

Louis Murphy

Florida police arrested Oakland Raiders WR Louis Murphy in April for a series of violations after they pulled him over reportedly because of music blaring from his SUV. Police charged Murphy with drug possession without a valid prescription for allegedly having a bottle of Viagra that he did not have a prescription for. Police also charged Murphy with failure to obey a police officer and resisting arrest.

Tyrell Johnson

Minnesota Vikings safety Tyrell Johnson was arrested early Tuesday morning, Sept 20, 2011, in Minneapolis on suspicion of driving while impaired.
