National Toy Hall of Fame 2014
The Ninja Turtle figure is among the 12 finalists for The National Toy Hall of Fame in 2014. The National Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, NY recognizes toys that have achieved icon status because of their longevity, innovation and ability to inspire creative play. Anyone can nominate a toy, but inductees are selected by a national committee. The honorees will join 56 other toys including Play-Doh, Hot Wheels, Lego and Barbie.
Finalist: Paper airplane
The paper airplane is among the 12 finalists for entry into the Toy of Hall of Fame for 2014.
Finalist: American Girl Doll
Toy Hall of Fame finalist, The American Girl dolls series has included more than 61 different dolls over the years. The variety allows customers to choose dolls that reflects the diversity of American girls.
FInalist: Fisher Price Little People
Fisher Price Little People for preschoolers was first produced by Fisher-Price in the 1960s as the Play Family People.
Finalist: Operation
The battery-operated game, Operation, that tests hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills was invented by John Spinello in 1964.
Finalist: Hess Toy Truck
The first Hess Toy Truck in 1964 was a replica of the Hess Oil Company's first B61 Mack truck and trailer. The toy's features were rare for its time: working headlights and taillights and fillable cargo tank.
Finalist: My Little Pony
My Little Pony, was launched in 1983 and marketed primarily to girls. Their popularity exploded after the huge success of the 2010 animated television series.
Finalist: Pots and Pans
The standard household pots and pans have survived the test of time easily accessible toys for American children.
Finalist: Slip N'Slide
Finalist Slip N'Slide, manufactured by Wham-O was first introduced in 1961 and invented by Robert Carrier.
Inductee: Little Green Army Men
Third time is the charm for the Little Green Army Men since they were nominated twice before for the Toy Hall of Fame and were inducted in 2014. They've been around since 1938, but became enormously popular with the hit 1995 movie "Toy Story."
Inductee: Rubik's Cube
Rubik's Cube was invented by Hungarian architect Erno Rubik ion the 1970s, but became a big hit in the U.S. in 1980. More than a 100 million were sold between 1980 and 1982.
Inductee: Bubbles
The third 2014 Toy Hall of Fame inductee is bubbles. More than 200 million bottles of bubble liquid are sold annually. Toy Hall of Fame spokesman Shane Rhinewalk called it the "toy of the imagination."
