National Geographic's 125th anniversary

In October 1888, the first issue of National Geographic magazine went to 165 members. It now reaches 60 million readers each month around the world.

The magazine celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2013. The following images are from the October 125th anniversary issue of National Geographic magazine.

1991 - Kuwait

Under the black clouds of burning oil fields during the Gulf War, camels forage desperately for shrubs and water in southern Kuwait. Front-line photographs of regions ravaged by human strife can also illuminate war's environmental cost.

1906 - Whitefish Lake, Michigan

Photography pioneer George Shiras made the first nighttime wildlife photos. Here he demonstrates his revolving camera tray, mounted jacklight, and handheld flashgun.

1990 - Brazzaville Zoo, Brazzaville, Republic of Congo

Jou Jou, captive chimpanzee reaches out its hand to Dr. Jane Goodall.

2008 - Scotland

On Skye's Trotternish Peninsula, basalt pinnacles loom over the Sound of Raasay. Rising from the debris of an ancient landslide, they bear witness to the geologic upheavals that shaped these lands.

1913 - Machu Picchu, Peru

An elevated view of about half of Machu Picchu, the lost mountaintop city of the Inca in the Peruvian Andes. National Geographic supported Bingham's excavations at the site from 1912 to 1915.

2011 - Mumbai, India

Seeking to capture the throng in Churchgate Station, Randy Olson coached a local assistant through the laborious process needed to get this shot because the perfect vantage point was closed to foreigners.

2011 - Bandhavgarh National Park

Meet Smasher - the male in the background. That's the name Steve Winter gave this youngster, cooling off in a watering hole in Bandhavgarh National Park, after he slapped the automated camera trap until it stopped clicking. Both tigers are thought to have killed people, and Smasher is now in captivity.

2008 - Giza, Egypt

Protesting high food prices, Egyptians thronged a kiosk selling government-subsidized bread near the Great Pyramid of Giza. Around the globe, rising demand and flat supplies have rekindled the old debate over whether production can keep up with population.

2011 - Uganda

A lion climbs a tree to sleep, in Uganda's Queen Elizabeth Park.
