How heavily armed is your state?
Here is a look at per capita weapons data, based on the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, and 2013 data from the U.S. Census.
While the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record is the only accessible list of its kind, it is not all-inclusive. NFA firearms only include the categories regulated by The National Firearms Act of 1934: machine guns, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, destructive devices like bombs and grenades, concealable devices with the ability to discharge a shot through the energy of an explosive, and any firearm with a bore over half an inch that has not been determined to have a legitimate sporting use.
But some guns fall outside of this scope, and many aren't registered, meaning surveys on gun ownership come to different conclusions. For a look at those results, check out this list.
51. New York
While this list is lengthy, it does not include categories like pistols, which make up a large percentage of the guns in the U.S. As such, the total numbers of guns in each state would actually be much higher than the figures here. This gallery is a but a snapshot of some of the broader trends.
New York comes in at number 51, with only 3.3 guns for every 1,000 residents. That's 64,353 registered firearms dispersed among 19,651,127 people. Here, two boys hold inflatable toy guns while taking part in the July 4th Liberty Festival in Liberty, New York.
50. Rhode Island
For every 1,000 residents in Rhode Island, there are 3.8 guns. That's 3,973 registered firearms dispersed among 1,051,511 people.

49. Delaware

48. Michigan
For every 1,000 residents in Michigan, there are 4.3 guns. That's 42,855 registered firearms dispersed among 9,895,622 people.

47. Massachusetts
For every 1,000 residents in Massachusetts, there are 4.9 guns. That's 32,682 registered firearms dispersed among 6,692,824 people.

46. Hawaii
For every 1,000 residents in Hawaii, there are 5.1 guns. That's 7,105 registered firearms dispersed among 1,404,054 people.
45. New Jersey

44. Iowa
For every 1,000 residents in Iowa, there are 6.1 guns. That's 18,880 registered firearms dispersed among 3,090,416 people.

For every 1,000 residents in Mississippi, there are 6.8 guns. That's 20,389 registered firearms dispersed among 2,991,207 people.
41. Nebraska
For every 1,000 residents in Nebraska, there are 7.4 guns. That's 13,864 registered firearms dispersed among 1,868,516 people.

For every 1,000 residents in Kansas, there are 11 guns. That's 31,926 registered firearms dispersed among 2,893,957 people.

Ohio is tied with Oregon for number 23 because it has the same number of guns per capita. That being said, the actual number of registered firearms in Ohio is much greater than the figure in Oregon because of its much larger population.

22. South Dakota
South Dakota comes in at number 22, with 11.5 guns for every 1,000 residents. That's 9,677 registered firearms dispersed among 844,877 people.
21. South Carolina
For every 1,000 residents in South Carolina, there are 11.6 guns. That's 55,286 registered firearms among 4,774,839 people.
20. Colorado
Colorado comes in at number 20, with 12 guns for every 1,000 residents. That's 63,178 registered firearms among 5,268,367 people.

19. Oklahoma
For every 1,000 residents in Oklahoma, there are 12.3 guns. That's 47,419 registered firearms among 3,850,568 people.

18. Texas
Texas comes in at number 18, with 12.8 guns on record for every 1,000 residents. That's 337,309 firearms among 26,448,193 people. In fact, the actual numbers are probably higher because Texans are not required by law to register their firearms. As such, the ATF can only count those who seek background checks.

The District of Columbia comes in at number two in the nation, with 66.4 guns for every 1,000 residents. That's 42,897 registered firearms dispersed among only 646,449 people.
1. Wyoming
Wyoming has the highest number of registered guns per capita of any state in America. For every 1,000 residents, there are 195.7 guns, about three times the rate of second-place D.C. That's 114,052 registered firearms in a state with a population of only 582,658 people.
