Military Photographer of the Year winners

A Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force, Jeremy "JT" Lock was named Military Photographer of the Year for 2011 - the sixth time he has been so honored. A Bronze Star recipient, Lock has also produced images which have appeared in National Geographic, Time Magazine, The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. Books featuring his work include "A Day in the Life of the United States Armed Forces," "NYC Life Going On," and "The War in Iraq." He also contributed to the PBS documentary "Slavery and the Making of America."

The AC-130U "Spooky" gunship is the primary weapon of Air Force Special Operations Command. Its primary missions are close air support, air interdiction and armed reconnaissance. The U model is an upgraded version of the H and is equipped with side firing, trainable 25mm, 40mm, and 105mm guns.

First awarded in 1960, Military Photographer of the Year honors (issued under the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs) recognizes excellence among military cameramen. This year's contest included 3,500 submissions from 603 entrants in several categories, including Feature, News, Portrait, Sports and Pictorial.

Kolfage was one of the first Airmen deployed to Iraq in 2003 at the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During a routine trip to the chow hall, a mortar flew over the walls of his camp and landed less than 10 feet in front of him. Kolfage barely escaped with his life and is the most injured surviving Airman from any war.
