Mrs. Obama danced in a white chiffon, one-shoulder gown covered in fluffy appliques and beading. Designed by Jason Wu, 26, it was a surprising choice, given her love of jewel tones and sleek silhouettes.

The gown's slight train swirled pleasingly when Mrs. Obama turned around and danced. The designer Wu is much loved in the fashion world but otherwise not well known.
