Mary Tyler Moore was born on Dec. 29, 1936, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She got her start in commercials in the 1950s, playing the part of a home appliance known as “Happy Hotpoint.” In 1961, she landed a starring role on the CBS sitcom, “The Dick Van Dyke Show.”
