Luckiest stray dogs on earth
Count these mutts as the luckiest strays on the planet. More than 750 dogs rescued from the streets of Costa Rica roam free in the mountains of Costa Rica, frolicking in the "Land of the Strays" -- a pooch paradise.
Looking for a Chihuapoodle Punky Hairas, Shaggy Cockerpoodle or Chewbacca Pekin Dog? This is the place to visit.
Thanks to the private organization caring for the strays, Territorio de Zaguates, many have found new homes with loving families in large part due to an inventive marketing campaign to eliminate the stigma of mixed breed dogs by giving them unique breed names.
Land of the Strays
There are more than a million stray dogs in Costa Rica, where the government outlawed putting animals down in 2003. Around 8,000 dogs have passed through the refuge, Territorio de Zaguates.
Territorio de Zaguates is dedicated to the rescue of abandoned dogs. The organization shelters, neuters and works to find loving homes for them.

Because mixed breeds are considered less valuable than pure breeds they have always been less adoptable. At the sanctuary, canine experts decipher the breeds present in each dog, and with the inclusion of a unique detail for every dog, give birth to unique breed names. Some examples include: Chubby-tailed German Dobernauzer, The Alaskan Collie Fluffyterrier, Chewbacca Pekin Dog, Shaggy Cockerpoodle, Crazy Terriernauzer, and Chihuapoodle Punky Hair.
The organization's marketing campaign: "When you adopt a mutt you adopt a unique breed" helped change perceptions and popularized the dogs in Costa Rica. The dogs got forever families and the organization raised $457,000 in 45 days.
