LI Serial Killer: Missing escort, crime scene & victims

Shannan Gilbert, 23, was an online escort who went missing on May 1, 2010, after visiting a client in a gated community in Oak Beach, Long Island. In her dramatic final hours, she made a frantic 911 call which eventually led to a extensive search of the area by Suffolk County Police and the discovery of evidence of a Long Island serial killer.

Shannan Gilbert went missing after visiting this house in a gated community in Oak Beach, Long Island, on May 1, 2010. Joseph Brewer, who lived there, had responded to Shannan's online ad. Shortly before 5 a.m., Shannan, afraid for her life, called 911 and ran out of the house, falling down the steps. Described as panicked and disoriented by witnesses, she knocked on the doors of two other houses in the community. She was last seen running on the quiet roads of the Oak Beach Association. Police told "48 Hours" that they do not consider her client, Joseph Brewer, a suspect.

In December 2010, Suffolk County Police, who were searching for Shannon Gilbert, made a gruesome discovery near Gilgo Beach on New York's Long Island. They found the bodies of four young women, all online escorts, wrapped in burlap and discarded in the heavy brush along a scenic two-lane highway known as Ocean Parkway. Police suspected right away that they were looking at the work of a serial killer.

Melissa Barthelemy, 24, was the first of the four bodies discovered near Gilgo Beach in December 2010. She went missing a year-and-a-half earlier on July 12, 2009. In the weeks following her disappearance, her 15-year-old sister, Amanda, was terrorized by a series of graphic phone calls made by a man calling from Melissa's cell phone. The Barthelemy family attorney, Steven Cohen, tells "48 Hours" that the caller's voice was probably that of a white male, between his late 20s and late 30s. The voice was described as calm but extremely menacing. Police believe the man who made these phone calls is in fact the Long Island serial killer.

Her sister, Melissa, tells "48 Hours" that Maureen turned to the escort business out of desperation: "She was getting evicted from her house. She needed to get some money. It was her last resort."
