This classic "double shot gun" style house is nearing completion thanks to the work of LowerNine.org's volunteers.
The area faces a unique set of challenges since it is a historic district of the city. For residents to get clearance to move back in, they need their homes to meet specific historic building codes, which can often hike up the price of construction.
LowerNine.org
The LowerNine.org headquarters houses volunteers from as far away as Russia and South Korea who come here for days, weeks, and in some cases, months, to work on the organization's ongoing building projects.
Areas of Frustration
This sign reflects a sentiment that many in the Lower Ninth share -- they feel as if they've been let down by their government, both local and federal. There is one school in the neighborhood where many once stood. Local business are few and far between and local law enforcement rarely patrol the area.
Much Left to be Done
Homes such as this one are a reminder that though life has very slowly begun to return to the Lower Ninth, many will not be around to see the progress.
