After six Academy Award nominations, an iconic star turn in "Titanic," and an Oscar win for "The Reader," Kate Winslet has proved herself one of today's leading actresses - a reputation burnished by her latest performance in the film, "Steve Jobs."

Born in Reading, England, in 1975, Kate Elizabeth Winslet made her television debut at age 15 on a British science fiction series called "Dark Season."
"Dark Season"
Kate Winslet starred in the 1991 BBC sci-fi series, "Dark Season," about teenagers battling sinister forces. Winslet was a chunky 15-year-old, yet even being on TV did not insulate her from the slings and arrows of schoolyard bullies. "I was teased for how I looked," she said, "because I was quite stocky as a child, and was very much teased for that."
Now 40, and one of her generation's brightest stars, the pain is still fuel. "I know that those nasty bullies are still out there," she said, "and there I am, with a big gold statue in my hand. I mean, that's a pretty great fist-pumping moment! That's a lovely message to say to those bullies, you know, 'Where are they? Where are they?'"
"Heavenly Creatures"
Kate Winslet received international acclaim for her performance in Peter Jackson's "Heavenly Creatures" (1994), based on the true story of a notorious murder case in New Zealand involving two obsessive teenage girls who murder one of the girls' mother.
Winslet won Best British Actress honors from the London Film Critics' Circle and the Empire Awards.
"Sense and Sensibility"

"Quills" (2000), directed by Philip Kaufman, stars Kate Winslet and Joaquin Phoenix in a story inspired by the writings of the Marquis de Sade.
"Enigma"
"Enigma" (2001), starring Kate Winslet and based on Robert Harris' novel, is a thriller centered on the intelligence work at Britain's Bletchley Park during World War II, and of code-breakers trying to crack the Nazi's Enigma machine.
"Iris"
In "Iris" (2001), Kate Winslet played the young writer Iris Murdoch who marries a young student (Hugh Bonneville). Winslet received an Oscar nomination, as did Judi Dench, who played Iris in her later years as she suffered from Alzheimer's.

Kate Winslet played a journalist investigating the story of an activist against capital punishment (Kevin Spacey) who is himself condemned to death in "The Life of David Gale" (2003).

"The Reader"
In "The Reader" (2008), Kate Winslet played Hanna Schmitz, a woman in post-war Germany who begins an affair with a 15-year-old boy (David Kross). Years later, as a law student, he reencounters Hanna, who is on trial for war crimes, revealing her past as an SS guard in World War II.
Winslet received her sixth Oscar nomination, and won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
