Francis Newton Souza was one of India's first artists to achieve international fame. He founded the Progressive Artist's Movement the same year as India's independence from British rule. Souza left India in 1949 and moved to London and then in 1967 he migrated to New York where he received the Guggenheim International Award. He passed away in 2002.

This film editor turned artist has made news in the U.S. with his canvas, "Mahishasura" that sold for $1.6 million to a private collector of Indian origin at a Christie's auction. Mehta is also a close friend of the Progressive Artist's Movement and has been part of several shows in India and overseas. Mehta lives and works in Mumbai.

Sayed Haider Raza was also part of F.N. Souza's Progressive Artist's Movement along with M.F. Hussain. Raza's work has seen a transformation over the years. Starting with expressionist landscapes, the artist moved on to geometric representations of landscape and then to non-representational still landscape. He has been conferred with the Padma Shree Award by the government of India. Raza lives and works in France.

Maqbool Fida Hussain is one of India leading and most talked about artists. His name is almost synonymous with contemporary Indian art. He was also part of F.N. Souza's Progressive Artist's Movement. Hussain has received two of the highest civilian honors, the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan from the government of India for his work.

Dodiya is a Mumbai-based artist who surfaced as a known face in 1999 when he did a series on Mahatma Gandhi. The other series of his that won him international acclaim was Bombay:Labyrinth/Laboratory that showed in Tokyo, Japan. Dodiya has won the Sotherby's Prize for Contemporary Art. Dodiya lives with his wife Anju in Mumbai.

Gupta draws his inspiration from everyday objects and situations, often showing the dichotomy of rural and urban India. His spectrum of creativity ranges from significant to irrelevant. Gupta has had several solo shows in India and abroad. He received the "Emerging Artist Award" in 1997. The artist lives and works in New Delhi, India.

Hashmi studied print making in India and then went on to teach at the Bennington College, Cornell University and then at University of California, Santa Cruz. Her work is represented in the collections of Museum of Modern Art, Victoria and Albert Museum and the Bibliotheque Nationalie, Paris. Hashmi has lived all over the world including Europe, Latin America and New York.
