How did Shayna Hubers reach her breaking point?
A look at the roller-coaster relationship of Shayna Hubers and Ryan Poston and how it ended in murder.
Shayna Hubers first met Ryan Poston on Facebook. He contacted her after spotting provocative photos of Shayna on spring break. The couple then started dating.
A Tumultous Relationship
On the outside, Ryan Poston and Shayna Hubers looked like the perfect couple. Ryan, was a successful attorney and Shayna, an accomplished graduate student, were poised for success. But the relationship was stormy. The couple broke up several times, but they always found their way back to one another.
End of the Road
In October of 2012, friends say Ryan Poston had decided to end the relationship once and for all. But Shayna Hubers showed up at his condo the night he had a date with Miss Ohio USA, Audrey Bolte, pictured.
Breaking Point?
When Shayna Hubers arrived at Ryan Poston's condo, police believe they had an argument and Shayna shot Ryan six times. Three of the six shell casings are seen here.
Self-Defense?
Shayna Hubers called 911 between 10 and 15 minutes after shooting Ryan Poston and told the operator that she "killed [her] boyfriend in self-defense." Shayna claimed that Ryan threw her across the room and into the bookshelf.
Investigators say there were no signs of a violent fight. Of particular significance to investigators are the bullets lined on the bookshelf that are still standing upright.
Strange behavior
Shayna Hubers surrendered and was brought to the Highland Heights, Kentucky, Police Department for questioning. She immediately requested a lawyer, but still could not stop talking to police for almost three hours. She danced and twirled, and even sang "Amazing Grace." Police say her behavior was bizarre for someone who had just lost a loved one.
Claims of Abuse
Shayna Hubers does appear to have some light bruising in photos police took after the incident. But police say they are not consistent with the life-or-death struggle she described.
Charged with Murder
After almost three hours with police, Shayna Hubers was formally charged with the murder of Ryan Poston. She spent the first of many nights in jail before going on trial and ultimately being convicted of murder two-and-a-half years later.
Shayna's Mom
Shayna's mother, Sharon Hubers, a retired school teacher, maintains that her daughter is not a murderer. She says Shayna is a brilliant and talented girl and would never kill someone if she wasn't in fear of her life.
A Family's Loss
It has been six years since Ryan Poston was killed. He leaves behind an extended loving family. They are coping with their loss, "One minute at a time. One hour at a time. One day at a time," they say.
