The Two Towers
The second installment in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, "The Two Towers", is among more than 40 movies, many of them Oscar caliber, that will open between now and New Years. Due out Dec. 18, it continues the journey, with the possibility of becoming the first sequel nominated for best picture since 1990's "Godfather, Part Three."

Jennifer Lopez stars in the romantic comedy "Maid in Manhattan" as a hotel maid who, after trying on a fancy gown, is mistaken for a glamorous socialite by a wealthy senatorial candidate. J Lo's love interest is played by Ralph Fiennes.
Evelyn
Pierce Brosnan takes time off from his 007 superagent duties for the true-life saga "Evelyn." He plays an unemployed Irish father who takes on the government and the Catholic Church after his wife leaves him, and his children are taken away.
25th Hour
In "25th Hour," Edward Norton plays a convicted drug dealer, facing a seven-year sentence, who spends his last 24 hours of freedom partying in New York. The film was directed by Spike Lee.
Narc
In "Narc," Jason Patric plays an undercover narcotics officer and recovering drug addict, who teams up with a volatile cop, played by Ray Liotta, whose partner has been murdered.
Antwone Fisher
Denzel Washington costars and makes his directorial debut with "Antwone Fisher," the true story of a violence-prone sailor who is sent to a naval psychiatrist for treatment.
Dangerous Mind
Another actor making his directorial debut is George Clooney. "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" follows the strange life and times of game-show impresario Chuck Barris, who claims he was a CIA agent. The film costars Drew Barrymore and Julia Roberts and was written by "Being John Malkovich" writer Charlie Kaufman.
Adaptation
Kaufman also wrote "Adaptation," very loosely based on his own experiences adapting the nonfiction novel "The Orchid Thief" for the big screen. Academy Award winner Nicholas Cage plays Kaufman and two-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep plays novelist Susan Orlean.
The Hours
Streep also teams up with two Academy Award-nominated actresses, Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore, in "The Hours." They all may be competing at next year's Oscars for bringing Michael Cunningham's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel to life.
Gangs of New York
Aother actor doing double duty this season is Leonardo DiCaprio. First up is "Gangs of New York," which opens on Dec. 20. In this Martin Scorsese epic, DiCaprio plays a young irishman who sets out to avenge his father's death in 19th century New York. The film costars Cameron Diaz and Daniel Day Lewis.
Catch Me If You Can
Just five days after "Gangs of New York" opens, DiCaprio plays the youngest man ever on the FBI most-wanted list in "Catch Me If You Can." Tom Hanks plays the agent in pursuit. Steven Spielberg directs this true story, which opens Dec. 25.
About Schmidt
In "About Schmidt," Jack Nicholson stars as Warren Schmidt, an aging insurance executive whose retirement triggers a soul-searching journey. Insiders predict Nicholson's 12th Oscar nomination and, possibly, his fourth trip to the podium.
Pinocchio
"Life Is Beautiful" Oscar-winner Roberto Benigni again assumes the mantles of writer, director and star with "Pinocchio." Just in time for school vacation, his special effects-laden family fantasy presents the classic adventures of a puppet who longs to be human.
Chicago
Broadway's finger-popping tale of infidelity and murder, "Chicago," reaches the big screen with a star-studded cast, including Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere.
Analyze That
Another highly anticipated sequel this season is "Analyze That." The comedy reteams Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal.
The Wild Thornberrys
"The Wild Thornberrys Movie" is the full-length spin on a popular Nickelodeon show about a couple who travel the globe and their daughter who has a talent for talking to animals.
