Army Spc. Ivan Lopez, 34, had transferred to Fort Hood in February after transferring from the infantry to serve as a motor transport operator.

Prior to his transfer to Fort Hood, Lopez was based at Fort Bliss, also in Texas, from April 2010 to February 2014.

Lopez, seen in this undated photograph taken from his Facebook page, was deployed to Iraq from August 2011 until December 2011, though military officials said he did not see combat.

He also did a one-year deployment in Egypt from January 2007 to January 2008.

Prior to serving in active duty, Lopez was a member of the Puerto Rico National Guard, entering in January 1999 as an infantryman.

He was in the Puerto Rico National Guard until March 2010.
