Kidnapped at age 11, Jaycee Dugard was snatched on her way to school in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., and was hidden for nearly two decades behind a series of fences, sheds and tents, even giving birth to her abductor Phillip Garrido's children in a suburban backyard compound in Antioch, Calif., less than 200 miles from her childhood home.

Famous Abduction Cases: Elizabeth Smart

Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped by Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Ileen Barzee from her Salt Lake City home in 2002 at the age of 14. She was found nine months later, 18 miles from her home. Smart later testified during her abductors' trial that she was raped daily and threatened with death if she tried to escape.

Famous Abduction Cases: Shawn Hornbeck

Shawn Hornbeck was kidnapped in 2002 at the age of 11 in Richwoods, Mo. He was held for four and a half years by Michael J. Devlin before he was found safe in January 2007.

Cleveland kidnapping victim Michelle Knight, pictured here shortly after her April 2013 escape from the home of her captor, Ariel Castro, disappeared in August 2002 at the age of 21. Castro took her to his home, lured her into the basement and restrained her. She was freed in May 2013 along with two other women.

Famous Abduction Cases: Amanda Berry

Amanda Berry is seen before she was kidnapped, left, and in a screengrab of a video from her first public statement since being freed in early May 2013 from a horrific kidnapping ordeal in Cleveland, Ohio. Berry was kidnapped in April 2003 after being lured into Ariel Castro's basement and restrained. She was 16 at the time. In December 2006, Berry gave birth to a daughter in the home. DNA evidence confirmed that the child was Castro's. She was freed in May 2013 along with two other women who'd been held captive in the house.

Colleen Stan was abducted and held as a sex slave for over seven years by Cameron and Janice Hooker in Red Bluff, Calif., between 1977 and 1984. Stan was 20 years old when she was kidnapped.

Famous Abduction Cases: Shasta Groene

In July 2005, 8-year-old Shasta Groene and her 9-year-old brother Dylan were kidnapped by convicted serial killer and sex offender Joseph Edward Duncan III in Idaho. Duncan killed the girl's mother, her mother's boyfriend and her 13-year-old brother. Shasta told investigators she was taken to a remote campsite and repeatedly molested. She was found with Duncan almost seven weeks after being kidnapped. Dylan's remains were later discovered in Montana. Duncan is currently on death row.
