Eric Rudolph - New Evidence

As part of a plea agreement, serial bomber Eric Rudolph told authorities where to find more than 250 pounds of dynamite and other materials buried in North Carolina. The government said some of the sites were near populated areas and could have posed a danger.

Based on Rudolph's information, on April 5, 2005, FBI and ATF agents dug up a bucket buried on a hillside across from the National Guard Armory building in Murphy, N.C. Materials found included a remote controlled firing system, a detonator, bolts and screws, and approximately 25 pounds of dynamite.

According to the ATF, the materials found at Site 1 could have produced at least one destructive device.

Site 2

These items were found April 5, 2005, in a rural area known as Unaka, about 10-15 miles northwest from National Guard Armory. Under the stump of a fallen tree, authorities found: two buried ammo cans containing tools, such as screwdrivers and pliers; wire; cannon fuse; components to make home-made blasting caps; a servo motor; electronic components; and a digital pager-transmitter.

Site 3

These items were located April 7, 2005, also in Unaka. A large Rubbermaid container was recovered from under the stump of a fallen tree. Inside was a small Igloo cooler, one ammo can, and three small round plastic containers. Inside the cooler were several dozen containers of Hexamine tablets, which were mentioned in a book on homemade detonators Rudolph had ordered.

Site 3

Approximately 38 pounds of nitroglycerin dynamite were inside the Rubbermaid container found April 7, 2005, in Unaka. The dynamite, described as in good condition, was identified as having been stolen from Austin Powder in Ashville, N.C., in 1996.

Site 4

Working from vague descriptions by Rudolph, on April 8, 2005, agents located approximately 88 pounds of dynamite buried in a rectangular Rubbermaid container near Unaka.

Site 5

After searching for more than a day, agents located Site 5 on April 7, 2005. A bomb-sniffing dog identified a Rubbermaid container holding approximately 110 pounds of dynamite in good condition.
