This is a 1949 portrait of Elia Kazan, who was awarded a Tony that year for directing Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman." Kazan, the hard-driving immigrant's son whose other triumphs included the original Broadway production of "A Streetcar Named Desire," and the Academy Award-winning film "On the Waterfront," died Sept. 28, 2003. He was 94.
